Well I was relegated after season 12. I was a bit too fast promoting. I started in season 10 in division IV.7 was undefeated the entire season, then went to division III.6 where I unexpectedly won and was promoted to II.4. There I had a MASSIVE income and spent every cent fighting to survive, a battle that went down to the last week of the season. So when I was relegated I had the team I had with no money at all and had to sell Peni Lucas my draft pick to stay financially afloat. My income was much WORSE than my first time in division III despite a much bigger stadium. My season ticket holders had abandoned me in droves. I had another undefeated season but despite thst made no money for then two seasons in a row. I should have sold some guys and tried to win with a lesser team but prices started going crazy about then. I had bought at the peak, when 30 year old big men with proficient skills were $600,000 and my expensive players were rapidly becomming worth much much less.

So while you still have the revenue I would try to fill your tean with effecient but cost effective players. If I was suddenly faced with relegation I would trim my team down to this:

PG - 3 trainees at least one who can be good in the best game of the week. 5k, 10k and 20k.
SG - Solid starter 30k.
SF - this is the most cost effective position and one where you can dominate the others 40k.
PF - but weaker on the primaries and better on the secondaries. A PF with good JS, JR, OD and PA will be as effective as one twice his cost with +2 in all primaries but all atrocious secondaries. 30k.
C - May have to spend bigger here as you will want someone with great primaries so you can LI yourself and defend those that want to LI you. 50k.
A backup swingman who can play all of PG, SG and SF but max 10k.
A backup bigman with good secondaries so a PF not a C. Max 10k.

That seems low compared to here but that is 200k and I think that would be all you could afford and still make a little money so you could buy one more guy for the playoffs if there is an injury or you need a boost against your biggest rival. Be aware that there are some division III teams with much higher wages than this, but I don't know how they do it.

There must be others that have been relegated who can recount their experience. I just know I bounced down and did everything to bounce right back.

Interesting read, and thanks for the reply.

I found it very enlightening/surprising that you think a 200k roster would be enough to get back up to div II after dropping to div III.

This could be the case. However when you do get back up the 200k team would not be enough to compete.

I currently have a 215k roster, but I am without support in all positions. I could perhaps, and likely will end up selling Malbasa, as his PF skills are letting him down this season. I intend to crank out secondaries from now, but it may not be enough, and his salary will put me above any kind of sustainable level in div III. Both Isaak and Malbasa will both increase easily above 50k next season I would think.

There are easier div III leagues around, but I'm sure that there are some who would give me a run for my money, my last league are sure they could compete. I'm not convinced they have grown enough to do it as I won last season comfortably. rProof will be in the pudding I guess, and I will have to see what this season brings now that I actually have a team to compete!

Sure some leagues like III.6 and III.10 have multiple teams that would be mid-level division II already, but there are others where the teams look mostly pitiful. There is always a lot of fear of an active demoted division II team managed by a competent manager as no-one knows how much cash they have and the fear factor can cause some teams to not try.

Yoda what a brilliant insight- how brilliant are you?

I've learned this season the hard way that Buzzer Beater is actually a "Basketball Management Game" and that the "Russian Roulette" approach of big spending is not sustainable.

A 300K player is not necessarily better that a 120K player, except that he can be a little bit more intimidating to other Managers or if the 120K players is Smeltz

Any advise to an old friend on the structure of the roster that I will need to be competitive & sustainable when I drop back into II.3?

I can't tell if you are joking or not. First lets see if you can survive the ABBL. A couple of key injuries to a close rival and anything is possible.

Well it's time enough to say I am officially out of contention of playoffs this season. I am really just hoping I can hold 5th so that I can avoid the relegation game. This could turn out to be an "upside-downside" season for me. If not, then I expect next season will be a big improvement on this.

Beechy to take the title with SAS and Hag to put up a fight.

Mate your good value and I hope you appreciate that I'm only trying to have some fun with a bit of friendly banter.

That said I'm surprised that you have time to read the forum of II.3 with all the time you spend on the ABBL forum.

You wont have to actively seek retribution as it will be yours and Yodas and everyone elses if I fall back into II.3

To be honest don't be surprised if I end up dropping down a few divisions whilst I have a major rebuild
