Is the problem really not preventable though? If the site goes down, couldn't you relist all the players who's auctions ended during the downtime, with the original bids still in place, as soon as the site comes back up.
Have the auctions for these players delayed based on how much time was lost due to downtime (ie if the site crashed 1 hour before a player's auction was supposed to end, then the player would get relisted for 1 hour when the site comes back up, maybe even a little longer, so managers have a chance to check).
