I personally like passing, especially if you play offenses like motion where I feel your bigs can get your wings open shots with good PA, but it's not necessary. 8 is good already indeed. I'm using an old salary calculator for potential (season 17) and it says it can go that far, but maybe not or only if you're lucky.

I am training 1v1 Forwards (him as SF) until Handling and Driving are a=16 or above. Then I am training Pressure as PG until his OD is 10. Any thoughts on him?

I'm thinking 16 is a bit high if you want to go that far before training the other skills. I'd do it more gradually, maybe 10 or 12 first then the other skills, otherwise it will take very long before he's useful in games. I'd also try and train his IS (assuming you want to make him an SG with some inside game too) whenever possible, since training secondaries will be harder later on.

You don't have to, but getting a couple pops in IS and ID wouldn't hurt. Maybe you could get them from cross-training in JS/1v1 and OD. A good thing is that his REB is low, so it won't take up salary or cap space.

Decided to return to this game after going inactive a while back and I got pretty lucky right off the bat with this guy:
Weekly salary: $ 2 895
DMI: 9400
Age: 18
Height: 6'10" / 208 cm
Potential: MVP
Game Shape: respectable
Jump Shot: mediocre Jump Range: awful
Outside Def.: awful Handling: mediocre
Driving: atrocious Passing: pitiful
Inside Shot: mediocre Inside Def.: average
Rebounding: average Shot Blocking: average
Stamina: average Free Throw: pitiful
Experience: atrocious
Currently training ID and I'm probably going to work on IS next. Any advice?

I would train his secondaries (guard skills) first before working on his primaries. I recommend training PA to at least inept, and training 1v1 Forwards until his DR also hits inept. Welcome back to BB.

I'd also say train secondaries first, especially Passing and OD in games you'll either win or lose anyway. You don't want to start your C trainee at guard in games that matter. JS/DR/HA can be trained from the PF spot, so if you start with OD/PA you don't have to worry with playing him out of position for some time. After that, I'd start with ID/RB so he won't be a liability on defense, then 1v1/JS/IS. You can start off with 1v1 for the elastic effect for PA and OD too.

I fail to see any statement he made which "jinxed" you. And now you'll know the price of having one player eat up your entire team salary.
