Just a reminder to everyone that Canada is in the knockout round of the consolation tournament. Tonight at 7:00EST we take on Iran. The team from the Americas that advances the furthest hosts the next regional tournament and has an easier path to Worlds qualification so there is a ton at stake. We're also currently on a season long undefeated streak.

As season 14 comes to an end I thought I would make a quick post to update folks on what's going on:

1) I will not be re-running for the position of national team manager. Some people close to me have had some ongoing health issues and as a result I need to prioritize my time and energy a bit better. I've decided to let someone else step up to the plate and I think there are a number of very good options to take over as NT coach. My only regret is that I only served one term because I think it takes a full season or a season and a half to really figure out how things work. I hope that the next manager is in for at least two terms.

2) I will finish scouting all the players in the NT pool before the enthusiasm reset on Saturday. From what I've seen so far I think that we are looking good moving forward. Moran is with a new owner who is committed to keeping him in shape and continuing to train him. The new owner is much more responsive and friendly than his previous manager. We also have guys like Maja, Kaleel and S. Milot finally maturing into potential rotation guys on the NT. I am not sure if our starting five is currently much better than it was a season ago, but we definitely have much more depth which will allow the next manager to better deal with gameshape issues and to have a bit more tactical flexibility (I think that both Maja and Milot are kind of specialists at this point).

3) I managed to achieve 2 of my 3 major goals as NT manager. My three major goals were to return to a top 30 ranking (just squeezed in there!), gain home court advantage for the next tournament of the Americas (got it!) and to improve on the national team's community building efforts. I feel like I sort of failed on the final one but it was both more difficult than I imagined (no matter how much you write or reach out to people you often don't get responses or readers) and more time consuming (which was paired with the issues in my real-non-internet-basketball-simulator life). I do think that finding new and innovative ways (twitter maybe? I don't know) to get people involved is a real challenge for the next manager.

4) I will try to post a larger wrap up and player ranking before I am forced to relinquish my unlimited and mighty powers, but no promises. I think the team is getting much better at the same time as other teams are being forced to react to the new economic realities of BB. We have a chance to make worlds in the next couple of seasons but it's going to take a community effort to do so.

A number of current, former and future NT players are on the market right now. I posted links off the offsite forum and it would be a great help to the NT if some committed and intelligent managers could consider purchasing these players to make sure they get training or at least stay in decent GS.

Player rankings:
I just finished updating our tracking list of players 22 years or older. I have trimmed the list down to 31 players after removing some of the old guard who are no longer being trained and are far behind the young up and comers. We have some good depth and some emerging role players at various positions.
I put together a very rough top five at each position. Obviously the new coach will have a different opinion on who the top five are, but I figured I'd provide some thoughts on my way out to keep people updating while elections are going on:
Point guards:
1 Michel Picard (6675688)
2 Sylvain Milot (9256242)
3 Stephen Pushkin (5660976)
4 Jérome Forest (10638219)
No clear candidate for fifth
Shooting guards:
1 Jabir Issa (7971662)
2 Ed Matthews (7972131)
3 Robert Lakie (7971352)
4 Tommy Germain (10638822)
5 Matthew Williams: (10637186)
Small Forwards
1 Geoff Abbott (4472574)
2 Paul Wendon (2931215)
3 Essa Abu-Kaleel (7971517)
4 Xavier Arel (7971254)
5 Chris Thomas (7972018)
Power Forwards
1 Téo Saint-Arnaud (6676028)
2 Scottie Smith (6605609)
3 Momar Maja (9256889)
4 Lester Griffith: (11816504)
5 Frank Guest (9256796)
Centres
1 Christopher Moran (9976392)
2 Peter Mahmoud (10637362)
3 Daniel Spencer (7972139)
4 Ginés Beato (10638354)
5 Ryerson Blenkinsop (6675585)

There are also three other players I want to highlight as being potentially useful:
Glenn Richards (13887630) - Still only 21 but will likely step directly onto the NT when he turns 22.
Leonard Speakman (10638139) - Has defied what I imagined a player of his potential can do. A potential role player as a very long distance shooter in a princeton or run and gun offense.
Edward Lowe: (10639045) - Potential pure scoring guard off the bench.

Personally I would start with a ten man roster that included only Picard at point guard but would have three shooting guards with Ed Mathews playing backup PG. This would give a few weeks of time to see how the other PGs develop.

The starting roster I would go with would be:
PG: Picard/Mathews
SG: Issa/Lakie
SF: Abbott/Kaleel
PF: TSA/Smith
C: Moran/Mahmoud

I know that hightower is know where close to making it to the NT :P, but where do you think he would rank in the top 10 for point guards atm, this would be very useful information as i am trying to decide whether to sell or keep him.

Haven't really followed the team but it seems like you did a fine job with everything and put the team in the right direction to move even higher.

The greatest of all time.

In terms of his current skills I don't think he's in the top ten at all and I would be more likely to use guys like Mathews, Williams, Issa, etc. at PG before he suited up. That said, his high potential and OD make a very likely player in two to three seasons if you keep training him. I can see him being in a S. Milot type situation where he is on the edge of making the team for a long time.
I think you should keep working on him, though. He has the potential to be very good despite his height and most of the other young guards being tracked seem to be getting SG training. I just wouldn't expect him to even get considered for a callup for two or more seasons.
