Depends what you mean by rookie. To me a rookie is any 18 year old player but as u said rookie status can mean anything u want.

Any player who was drafted will have the text "(name) was pick (number) in the season (number) draft by (team)" on his player page, like Cuevas does. Marrero does not have this, therefore he must have been created when his team was created. AFAIK those are the only two ways a player can come into existence.
