Are you sure you will be promoting?

My understanding was that the runner-up in a league does not always promote. You have your work cut out for you to beat the team your up against in the final.

He promotes, even if he'll lose the finals.
But you need to get some stronger players (except maybe for guards, as I assume you're training those). So for starters try to find some good inside players (with high salary); if they're older, they'll be cheaper. Transfer prices are somewhat lower during the playoffs, but you can get some good deals next season as well. The money you get when promoting will help somewhat.
And when you can, build up you arena, as that's your lifeline. Experiment with the prices to find the best way to get the most out of it; as you noticed, high or max prices isn't exactly in your advantage (if at some point you'll be loosing games, you'll have an even lower attendance).
Good luck in the finals!

Are you sure he promotes? As I understand only the league champion automaticly promotes, then teams with the next best record promote. With a 18-4 record its almost impossible for him to promote if he looses.

dont forget there are 4 times as many teams in lower divisions, so for expamle one div I team and four div II teams. At the end of the season 4 teams will get demoted. There are 4 div II winners, so those four teams fill those voids. Then bots are removed and filled with the next best record. I see a TON of 19+ win teams in div V. So basicly he is fighting for a bot cleanup spot with a ton of teams ahead of him with better records.

So at the end of the day small fries, you need to win the championship!

What you say is true, however, in the low divisions both teams that reach the finals promote. And I know this first hand.
Also, from the manual:
"In divisions VI and lower, both playoff finalists will promote to the higher level of divisions."

He is Division 5 though that rule applies to Division 6 and lower.

Haha i misread that too i thought it was 4 and lower. Anyways thank you for all the replies. And yes im training gaurds and according to salary calculators ill have 2 gaurds at about 10k each. Ive also been trying to get a big man but i am low on money so hopefully i can find a good one cheap. Now that i think about it i might be better off in div. V next year. I do have a chance at winning the finals though as my oppenent has lower enthusiasm and i have it at 11. I guess we'll see haha

You're on the borderline where you might promote even if you lose the finals due to bots in higher divisions. The tiebreaker is W-L record, which in your case is pretty good but not elite and there are some V leagues with multiple 20 win teams.

As for your team, you're not ready to compete yet. How much money do you have? You could go in one of two directions, you could either spend just enough money to try to hang around at that level, probably finish 5-7th and hope to win relegation or you could spend a good amount of money on older but skilled big guys to compliment your young guard trainees. I went with the second route in this past season (my first in IV) and made the playoffsl by buying a 28 year old PG and SG (although I didnt have money for the SG until late in the season. If you pay attention to game shape and enthusiasm, you have a good chance of doing well in IV with this strategy.

Yea i dont have much money because i have been putting it into the arena but that will be my plan for next season. I have also been thinking about switching to PF/C training since 2 of my gaurds should be around 10k or above in salary and they are balanced...would that help? My goal from the beginning was to not buy many players from FA but im afraid im going to have to if i want to promote lol.
Also...what is the average salary for starters in Div 4?
