If you want to have a trainee play for 48 minutes:

Set the trainee as the starter with no backup.


Or better yet, set the trainee as the starter, backup and reserve.

I don't think that is necessary. I have received 48+ minutes every single time with my current team and previous iterations following exactly what Mike Rice said. It certainly won't hurt you, however.
