Well you get at least 1 play-off game which will generate some income and supporters will appreciate it more than ending 5th so next season you'll see better attendance than in the other scenario. so indirectly you get some cash back for it.

I had to look it up again. This is it:

"Players are only paid in weeks when you have a competitive league game, with the exception of the fifth ranked team, which pays half the salaries in the first playoff week. This means that a team not in the playoffs might not pay salaries during the last two weeks of the season (again with the exception of the fifth ranked team), while some teams will skip one week of salaries. Because the week runs from Sunday to Saturday, all teams begin paying salary again during the offseason week ending with the season opener."
