But which one should I use? Outside or inside? I read interpretations of this defense in the forums which is different than the ones in the manual...

Inside box and one means that 1 player defends against best (in offense) guard of opponent team and other 4 players play zone
Outside box and one means that 1 player defends against best (in offense) big man and other 4 play zone

Thanks. But is that one player selected from the whole lneup/ from guards/from bigs? And as I understand that player has the best defensive potential?

System is supposed to pick best corresponding defender from the lineup. However, some people reported (on forums) that sometimes selections are questionable

Based on my previous experience it seems to be the player with the best combination of defensive skills (e.g. OD and ID) regardless of assigned position in the depth chart. So if you play inside box and you have a big fella with higher total OD and ID than other players then he will be assigned man-man against top opposing guard. I have no solid data to back this up but it has been observed during times when I play box and one defenses.

Would you say that inside box is less risky in this case than 3-2? Assuming that team can switch to inside tactic (he usually plays outside tactic, but sometimes switches to inside).

No easy answer. But. You can set. Your defense to a rotation to try deter that. With the "play as option" on the positional planning lists.

If you have a single player with a good OD, defense rival guard with a m2m and put your best defender against him.
If you have 3 guards with good OD, then use a 3-2 zone

What do you mean by that? Do you mean "play my X as X in defense" option?

Inside box is usually the least attractive option IMO because of its unpredictability, there is no telling when the GE will go crazy and assign whichever player it calculates as best defender. However with M2M defense, as stated by other users before me, you can be sure that if you assign a high OD player against him that would be the preferred matchup for the rest of the game at least.
