The most common convention is to use one of your 2 game weeks (all star break, if you're not in the cup, or 1-3 weeks of the offseason depending on your league finish and playoff/relegation results) periodically to train stamina. In my experience, 2 weeks of stamina training every 3 seasons will hold a player within a range of +/- 1 stamina.
