Very helpful, actually. =)

So (for us noobs) it's probably okay to go with our starters in both the cup and conference matchups this week since the only potential harm will be a hit to gameshape?

Game shape is fairly important to game play. I highly recommend getting your players the 50-65 minutes. If you Game Shape drops below Respectable, it is OBVIOUS when you compare performance between games. It will stabalize around Strong if you manage your minutes well, with some weeks being proficient. And the difference in performance between proficient and average is rather remarkable statistically.

Okay, thank you very much for the help.

Just one remaining question from my original post. I'm assuming that the minutes played we're discussing with respect to gameshape is total minutes played and not just those played by position. Is that correct?

I've been trying to control my minutes, but it's really wierd because my backups are getting almost as many minutes as my starters. I've got 2 guys at 47 minutes. Should I play them at all, and risk them going above 65 minutes, or hope that they get some sort of training even though they are below 48?

Probably Stamina related. If your starters have low stamina, the minutes will be a bit more equal between starter and bench. If it were me I would play those two 47 minute guys as back-ups, unless they were less important trainees tha someone who needed the minutes more.
