I think you didn't consider that is important to compare attack and defense but is important to consider also the rebounds. I've seen few games won by teams that had a minor percentage of rebounds and following the rules you've better chances to win the rebounds if you play 2-3. I still don't know how much should be the gap between attack and defense to cover the missing rebounds.

So is it the general impression that 2-3 zone is better for rebounding than Man-to-Man?

If so, something in the Game Engine is screwed up...Man-to-Man should always be better than Zone for rebounding.

Defenders know who they have to block out for a rebound

When a shot goes up, you are supposed to block out. Just who do you
block out? In man-to-man defense, this is easy. It’s the person you are
assigned to guard. As long as you have not lost your person, you know
exactly who you must keep off the boards.

In a zone defense, you’re responsible for an area. So when a shot goes
up, you need to find a person in your area to block out. What if there are 2
people in your area? Then you need to block one out, and hope someone
comes over from another area to help you. If not, it could be an easy
rebound and basket for the other team. If there is no one in your area to
block out, then you need to see what area needs help.

Nope thats not how it works normally when you play zone (in europe).

I haven't got a board now to draw it for you but when we (= my team) play a 2-3 zone in real life this is what happens;

All your players are in the inside of the 3-point line, all "inside passing/running lines" are covered, all players outside are free. The opponentss can pass relativly easy around, and the zone defense moves from ballside to ballside.
Then if someone takes a shot, all zone defenders turn around make a few steps in front and make a solid circle under the bucket.
When you have a circle like that with empty space in the middle you will pick more rebounds than in a man-to-man, because the ball will most likely fall into that circle and it's very hard to enter that circle for the offenders.

Of course this is when the defense is executed perfect, but that's the difference with a man-to-man. It's easier to avoid being boxed out and pick an offensive rebound than to enter that circle of defenders.

I understand how a zone defense works....and your explanation doesn't really address the issue of boxing out. Creating a circle under bucket is essentially what any defense does once the shot goes up, but with man-to-man, offensive player usually has a defender between him in the bucket. In zone, there a gaps in the zone that an offensive player can exploit to find a path to the basket and grab a rebound.
