I think that your idea is going in the wrong direction. There are times now where players are not being trained on purpose to keep their salary in check. I think the only direction to go would be to be able to train a C playing C in passing....but it would need to be made less effective than a C playing PG in passing. So you would be able to choose whether you wanted train effectively or conviently.

My 2 cents on this:
On the idea that day trading is rewarding. It is very much so when you're in lower divisions and can get by with the marginal players that go for a wide range of prices. I day traded my way through division IV and set myself up to be competitive in div III, then realized i need a long term plan to get through div III and have a prayer of competing in div II and beyond.
One of my favorite aspects of this game and especially being in the US, is that it seems at times impossible to get to the NBBA because the teams that have been around since the beginning seem to have a monopoly on those top slots, but, every now and again one of those teams slips up or an injury happens and they get relegated and one of the teams from below comes charging in to get their shot. And just hoping for that shot at some point knowing i may very well never get it but there is that chance that makes this game that much more fun for me.
I think that patience is not one of the things that people here in the US are good for so i think this might be one of the big reasons that folks here in the US dont enjoy this game, and why we are dropping so many users here in the US.
I think one of the most overlooked parts of the training (and i am beginning to think one of the reasons that people dont like the current training format) (and my personal favorite part of this game), is that each division has more or less a cap on how much income you can have, therefore there is a cap on the type of team that you can have. Not only do you have to have a training program, in my opinion, you need to have an idea of what that cap is. For example, my team now i have young guards that could have higher salaries but i figured around 250k is the cap on the salaries you can have for your team in div III. So i have balanced out my guards and to be honest i chose to go for promotion rather than training some U21 type players. So right now they are very well balanced with not so great jump shot, and based off the Salary Calculator i should be very close to 250k salary when this season starts. This next season i am going to devote most of the season to Jump shot so their salaries in effect will sky rocket and im hoping this last push gets me not only into div II but has me competitive as soon as i get there.
The best part for me, and i think one of the reasons this is the best simulation game i have ever played. If it doesnt work i will have to blow up my team and more or less start from scratch. It goes back to because of the way the draft is, the way the training works, the way the transfer market is structured and the fact that at times they all work against each other there is no perfect way to play this game. Everything you do is both right and wrong, works and doesnt work. I would hate for there to be "the way" to build your team it would mean that my (and everyone elses) creativity and thoughts on how to run and build a team would be for naught because it would be structured how you are supposed to do it.

back to the original topic, the biggest problem with lack of american interest is the ability to get your friends into the same league. I know most of my friends might find the game interesting and fun, but if they could not be in the same league they could lose intrest fast. Seriously how much fun would that be if you could all be in the same league? That is the major holdback in my opinion. While other fantasy sports dont compare to this game they do have the ability to have all your friends together in the same league.
If you look at the most popular internet games today they are all social games. The second biggest problem is the lact of socializing on this game. If thre was a 24/7 chat option, that will greatly enhance the experience. You should not have to log on, you should automaticly be logged on. That way whenever you log in you can say hello to your league, your country or the world. Instant socializing.
I am in Div V and there are only 3 active teams parcipating in forums and thes same three are the only ones communicating with each other. It took half a season to get the forums going, before I arrived there was ZERO activity in the league forums.
I've played in online football league (sierra front page football) and all the owners were very active. It got to the point were we all became friends and ended up calling each other on the phone while playing the game. I hesitate to get people to join this game simply becuase they would be isolated in a league where they didnt know anyone. Maybe they get an active league, maybe they dont.
Lastly, this is not the easist site to navigate. There needs to be a better tutorial and some kind of mentor program. It is very overwhelming in the begining. The better guide and people to help them would be such a huge boost. Live chat would do wonders for getting new users going. Imagine when you first started and where getting frustrated trying to figure things out, how awesome is that to be in a live chat and ask questions? the community becomes the mentor.
Now that I have dropped my thoughts down, I realize live chat is the most important thing for this game. Socializing, help, community. Do it BB!

I'm pretty sure I would sit in a 24/7 chat most of the day...

[qWhen players are training defense, what determines what skill they would train in? Does it go by height, position played, a combination, or something else altogether? ]
Defense would train both ID and OD, but height and age would come into it. Position would be immaterial. So tall people would gain more ID, short would get more OD. Old players would not gain much. The current settings for age and height could be used.
As to the 'I don't want players trained to save on salary' question, use a tick box saying 'no training' and then these players would not be trained. Hattrick does this, so it is not hard to implement.
