Game 4 – Chumunga 91 defeat Koopasaurus 84
Koopasaurus tried playing a nice patient offence in this game, and unfortunately the all-Aussie starting line-up of Koopasaurus were just too darn patient, leaving their scoring run much too late to prevent Chumunga from taking the win. Both teams looked to kick the ball around (11 players hit double figure scoring), and to kick their opponents while they were at it, with Alfred Rooney and Mohammed bin Mat Noor (Koopasaurus) and Rafal Gierkowski (Chumunga) all fouling out.
Votes
3 – Glen Tidwell (Chumunga) 24pts, 5rbds, 3asts
2 – Francis Masters (Chumunga) 17pts, 6rbds, 5asts
1 – Mohammed bin Mat Noor (Koopasaurus) 15pts, 18rbds
A tough one to separate votes, with lots of players contributing to their teams endeavours. Tidwell gets the nod as the game’s high scorer, and for the excellent defensive work against both Scrimgeour and Hare. Masters was the faithful number two for his team and gets the two votes. Mohammed bin Mat Noor gets the 1 vote for taking on the big Russian Berestetskiy (who has had a great Fishbowl) and coming away with a moral victory.
Game 5 – Urmummas 121 defeat Moorditj Magick 75
Game 5 of the round saw the number 3 ranked team in the country take on the rapidly climbing 65th ranked Moorditj Magick, and let’s just say there is a slight gap between 3rd and 65th. As the guy who introduced Matty8 to the world of Buzzerbeater I want to just say his team is becoming great, he got his tactics right and that…yeah, he got spanked by Urmummas (hehe). The margin was 15 at the end of the 1st period, 28 at half time and 49 at three quarter time. Not much else to say.
Votes
3 – Sun Cunming (Urmummas) 27pts, 18rbds, 11-14FG
2 – Jaak Vahi (Urmummas) 17pts, 8asts, 4stls, 7-11FG
1 – Theo Coungnand (Urmummas) 18pts, 7asts
Cunming was the standout by far in this game, taking the solid inside defence of the Magick 2-3 zone and making it look second rate. Jaak Vahi gets the nod over Coungard and Marcelo Rodriguez (Moorditj Magick) for the assists+steals. That and you know…Estonian.
Game 6 – Black Label Society 120 defeat Chelsea Seagulls 117
Easy choice for Game of the Round. Black Label Society had clearly decided before the game that if your name was wasn’t Phung, Howorth, or McArthur that you really should not be shooting the ball. The Seagulls went even simpler…give the ball to Olli (does anyone else remember when the Seagulls were all about the outside shooting, or is it just me that recalls that?). After a stale mated 1st period the BLS back court came out swinging (and swishing) to give their team a half-time lead. The Seagulls struck back in the second half, taking a 97-100 lead with 20 seconds left in the game, before the Aussie veteran, Tyler Chowdary, fresh on the court, hit a massive three pointer from the top of the arc to tie the game. The teams traded blows throughout overtime, but it was BLS that managed to get the break, again off a clutch three pointer from Chowdary, and snatch the win.
Votes
3 – Olli Krentschker (Chelsea Seagulls) 46pts, 18rbds
2 – Du Phung (Black Label Society) 36pts, 8rbds, 3stls, 3asts
1 – Shaun McArthur (Black Label Society) 27pts
No Olli tonight and this game would not have gone into OT. Phung was outstanding in all aspects of the game, with McArthur getting the single vote for a great offensive and defensive performance. Special mention to Tyler Chowdary who only played 3 minutes, but his 6pts came from two 3FG right when his team needed them.
