I believe like you. Since the beginning I saw the same price, even I had in the past 1-year supporter, and it was expensive for me in that moment. But I really enjoy it.
Maybe it was the way it was express that confuse the community. I believe the game improve a lot since the first season I came, And now I am only looking forward it will continue improving.

I agree with Teemo. I think most people will be quite happy about this except those who bought supporter recently (I'm one of them and I don't care, honestly), but it should have been worded differently in the update calendar to highlight this was not going to be a gameplay or organisational related change so that people would not get their hopes up.

I also agree with RiP: this is a gamble for BB, as it's difficult to predict the result and may well end up losing them money in the long run. However, I also think this is more of a short term move, possibly setting up something else: maybe they are trying to raise a little money to fund some other implementation in the next year or so. Hard to tell.

Supporter does have some nice features, hopefully this was a good choice.

Maybe. Maybe they will finally use the money they got from donations and supporter money to advertise smartly. Maybe they will use it to expedite a mobile friendly version of of the site or an app. I don't know, but I do hope they use it well, because as you say numbers might still go down and this will potentially bring in less money down the line.
