OK, I guess it's time we clear this up. Promotion will work like this:
1. Conference champions (teams that reach the league finals) automatically promote (circa 80 leagues * 2 = 160 teams)
2. this leaves 256 - circa 160 = circa 96 spots to be filled by these criteria (in order)
- conference rank
- wins
- forfeits
- point difference
- points made

This means, in practice, that a the top ranked, non-conference champion teams are all mixed up together and the top ranked ones will be promoted. This, of course, means that some leagues may have only 2 promoting teams, other ones may have 4 or 5 or even more promoting teams!

However, we still reserve the right to change this if we think of a better promotion strategy, but basically this is the option which is probably going to be used.

Well this is kinda bad. Even with a very high win ratio but just third place in a Conference (possible #3 in the whole league overall) can only promote when advancing to the final.

Even if all #1 placed teams advance to the final, there are still just about 96 teams able to promote, means about 1,5 per league. So maybe both #2 ranked team may promote, but definatly no #3.
So even with a Win Ratio of 19:3 (same as #2 ranked but worse point difference) and and an overpowered opponent in the conference final there wont be a chance to promote. I don't think this is a good idea.

I would like to have "conference rank" replaced with "league rank" or removed at all, so there is at least a slight chance for a #3 placed team.

for example all conference winners are #1 and #2 in the league overall, which means all #3 may promote and very few #4 in the league overall.
Without a "league rank" and just going with "win ratio" there is a even bigger chance for good #3 placed (conference) teams to promote.


Edit: I thought of this because we have such standing in our Austrian Bundesliga (http://www.buzzerbeater.com/league/1235/overview.aspx)
If this was an Utopian league i would be so angry if i can't promote as #3 in the blue group.

My conference had 3 teams (of the currently leading 4) in the cup until the last few rounds and the other had none. 3 teams in my conference are ranked 7, 19, 32 in the nation and had to make choices and give up league games to stay in the cup. In the last round of the cup in order to beat a 200k+ roster on the road with a 99k roster I had to win the tactic battle AND crunch.

Unsurprisingly the leader of the other conference (and 2 other teams) have a better or equal record to the leader of my conference. I do not think a league ranking would be fair to the top teams in my conference, who, irrespective of the record, have had and will have a tougher schedule compared to the other conference.

I don't like this idea.
I myself, have 7 losses already, why? Because I wanted to build up my arena, and my team equally, and in doing so, I sacrificed some league wins, and then got a bad cup matchup which cost me that as well.
HOWEVER
I have not given up on promoting, I am just doing it in the way that I know my arena is the best in my league (thanks to beta.buzzer-manger.com) By a substantial margin. Knowing that, I know that as I win games now focusing on winning, that I will be making more money than all the other teams in my league. As I make more money, I am able to do more with tinkering with Free Agents, as well as continuously expanding my arena. Even should I miss promotion this year, i have 100% Confidence I will promote next year, and then be in better position in the next division than several teams with tiny arenas, that "forced" their way into promotion the 1st year

Well im going to kick myself if I dont promote this season because I believe that if I did sneak into Div 3, I would be well placed to promote into Div 2 the following season.

I have a deep roster with developing & well balanced young players and also have a reasonable size stadium.

I will only have myself to blame if I miss out, because focusing on and using enthusiam in a couple of cup games wasnt congruent with my overall "middle of the road" strategy where i trained a low cost roster for most of the season before turning over a few trainees and buying up at the end of the season.

The points difference & league game or 2 that I lost chasing a longer run in the cup, will ultimately cost me a home court advantage in the first round of play off games, which in turn will probably cost me promotion

Whilst I do only have myself to blame if I do miss out, a way of ensuring that the most capable teams do get promoted this season, would be to also promote the 6 top finishing teams across all leagues who have achieved their win loss record, without having had a player on their roster over the age of 30.

Or perhaps we could just promote the top finishing team across all leagues which has the name "Totally Addicted".

Seriously though no system for deciding on which teams shall make up the numbers in Div 3 next season is going to be perfect.

in my opinion if you promote in Div3 you will be well placed for relegation. you have a deep roster, i agree, but the quality of your players doesn't seem so good as you think. in my division your team would probably finish with a 12-10 or 13-9 record in 4th-5th place in the conference. your stadium is as small as when you started, you only added a couple of hundreds places, lousy if compared to my 7k. if you get promotion you will probably awake from your dreams and face a bad surprise.

Ive spent in excess of 550K on stadium expansions

Dont judge a roster by its weekly salary, my players have balance and my roster has depth plus Im also training.

Value for money players means that I can save and buy other players

My oldest player is currently 27 yo so the losing of skills through age is not a concern at the moment for me.

Irrelevant im competing in my league and will finish with a 14 to 8 record in either 2nd or 3rd place

if you get promotion you will probably awake from your dreams and face a bad surprise.

I think Ive been around Buzzerbeater long enough to have a fairly good understanding of the game

In my opinion you'd be better off staying away from giving advice. His arena is 5759, he spent 571k on it (before his last expansion) and he made about 86k in gate receipts just recently. Your arena was 6500 until your last home game, you had spent 350k and you haven't cracked 64k revenues. I've had 75k revenues on average with a 5200 arena.

So it appears that some people fail to grasp basic concepts that should really be obvious to anyone such as:
a) There is a difference in quality in the way you can expand your arena arena and 5.5k seats may well be superior to 7k (which is so clearly the case between the two of you, because he balanced and you smartly went for an all-bleacher venue)
b) At this level setting the prices has a higher impact than the size of the arena itself. Looking at you selling out 2/3 type of seats all season long only tells you how incapable you are to set the prices right, yet you go around giving suggestions to others.

I don't want to wake you up mate, because I'm mean, but someone probably should.

Thank you for highlighting this to our learned friend.

I have invested in the stadium to a point where, any more investment would either result in empty seats or me having to drop the price to fill them.

Last gate receipt as you say was around 86K (just over 87k) and the one before was close to 91K.

I have invested just over 1.1 mill in youngish well rounded players, some of whom I have already sold for profit.

From experience when it comes to building a roster, the vital pieces are the cost efficient well rounded players who capably fill roles and because of their lower salaries enable you to buy your best couple of players.

Whilst I am experienced in the game it has been a while since i had a team in 4th division and as a result I initially did stuff up my ticket prices, which I learned from.

Reality is that whilst I have used a middle of the road strategy to position myself within reach of promotion, I believe that another team Team Answer3 II (276025) in my conference has used the same strategy as me, only a little better.

He has got the home court advantage over me in our 2 v 3 finals game and he has chosen to top up his roster in the last few weeks with some cheap oldies who I believe he has trained game shape with.

I am philosophically opposed to buying old aging players, which has probably hamstrung me a little, but all the best to those teams who did do this and as a result do manage to promote.

I would have quite enjoyed the chance to compete for the first Div 1 championship in Utopia in a couple of seasons time, but I now think that I have missed out on this opportunity
