quick, cheap, general suggestions:
1) cut costs. get rid of yer bums, the worst of the worst. get your squad down to 10 to 12 players. you can try selling them, but i doubt you would get their salary for a week. fire 'em.
2) like Noah, pick out 2 good SGs, 2 PGs, 2 SFs, 2PFs, 2Cs and whoever else passes the smell test. at this stage, don't obsess about age -- although young players can be trained. Keep a decently crummy 18 or 19 year old over a not completely incompetent 24 year old. the former can be trained.
3) learn all you can about training and master that quickly. minutes, game shape, how training works -- forget about stupid distractors like "wins" -- train. if you want to see what a trained player looks like, become familiar with the transfer list.
4) figure out your priorities. i remember in div. v everybody loved run and gun, i chose defense. i won. i would suggest become good at defense (pressure, inside defense, rebounding).
5) after you get a handle on this game (a couple of weeks), look for bargains on the transfer list. players with low potential (role players, 6th men) are sometimes undervalued. you don't need mvp potential in div. v.
good luck. have fun. this is a great game. but it requires patience.
