BC 1st round draft history
2006 - bargnani (lets face it, at the time, who could pass up on a 7 footer than can sink 3s and supposedly compared to dirk, especially with bosh handling the 4?)
2007 - none
2008 - roy hibbert (traded for jermaine oneal which everyone thought would pair up great with bosh)
2009 - derozan
2010 - eddy
2011 - JV (ok fine, 1 more european)

In the current roster:
calderon was a babcock signing which BC actually tried to trade before MJ nixed it
so besides kleiza (cheap deal imo), barbosa (brazilian) and alabi (nigerian), the rest of the team is american

not sure about drafting ALL THESE euros comment

i still feel BC was limited in his first few 2 seasons trying to fix babcocks mistakes, then the next 2 trying to please bosh... NOW hes finally got the financial room and roster flexibility to really build HIS team from the ground up

Sorry but I think that's a complete cop-out.

From the moment BC showed up, he's been all about the quick fix. He's an extremely impatient GM. And because of that, he never fixed the team properly and never found a 2nd (or 3rd) all-star level talent to play beside Bosh. You simply can't contend in the NBA without stars and now he has 20 win team completely void of all-star level talent. This mess is completely his making and nobody else should be blamed for it. That's what happens when you don't take the time to build a bad team properly.

As for fixing Babcock's mistakes? There were none left to fix my friend. He took over a team with a all-star player still on his rookie contract (bosh), a team with about $15-18 million in cap space and they had just won the rights to the 1st pick in upcoming draft. BC was handed an almost ideal rebuilding situation and (sadly) completely f'd it up. We'll see if he can get it right with his 2nd try but my confidence in BC started with a 10 and has dropped to about a 2. Hopefully I'm wrong. At least he appears to be avoiding the quick fix mentality this time although he still seems to have a unhealthy attachment to Bargnani.

(none of the above should be considered an endorsement for the completely incompetent Rob Babcock)

I was unclear, when I said draft I meant draft/trade

sure a 7 footer who can sink 3s looks great on paper, but what else can he do? He gets tossed around by players who are much shorter than him. and like I said, this team needs more defensive stoppers that have inside presence and BC doesn't get that. What ever BC tried to do to please Bosh obviously didn't work and they lost him for nothing in the free agency. which means he is a dumbass.

i wouldnt say he hasnt tried to get a 2nd/3rd star behind bosh
from tj ford to jermaine oneal to hedo, BC has tried in my opinion
its just that his visions just never really panned out the way he wanted
but he has fixed his mistakes quite quickyly

i totally agree with his quick fix mentality though, which has probably pushed the overall team development a few seasons back
1 should also consider the fact that most perennial contenders are way over the soft cap and for whatever reason the raptors (MLSE) have never put that much money into the payroll... this also factors in why we cant have a proper 2nd or 3rd star and maintain the bench depth

Season or no season, it won't be fun.

On that topic though, I think there's going to be a sizeable amount of the season lost to the lockout.

The greatest of all time.

Im tired of hearing BC's mistke with bargnani. He cant play defense, cant rebound, becaause "he has more compicated thing to do".

Drafting bargnani was a good idea at the time. Who else was on the board?
Aldridge? He's The exact same player as Bosh
Roy? Already had injury problems
Fine, you can make an argument for Rudy Gay, but can't for Rondo seeing as no one knew he would turn out the way he did.
You cant blame BC for drafting a guy who just to damm lazy to play defense.

And we do seem to be making a turn defensively, the last 2 drafts, JonasV/Davis are defense first players, and we just got a new defensive minded HC in Casey, who hopefully can help a bit.

Im no BC fan boy, but i think hes doing all the right things now, rather than like in the past when he had to build around a player who wasnt a legit first option.

Couldn't agree more. So may people who know and write about the game lauded him at the time of both the J.O. and the Hedo trades thinking that it would give Bosh the support he needed to push us into the playoffs and I think that had Hedo's attitude been better and had Bosh not gotten injured after the allstar game 2 seasons ago then the Raps might have made some playoff noise. And your point about who else should he have drafted is also a very good one.

BC has clearly drafted very well in the last 2 years and I don't believe in all of this "not another Euro" rubbish that people keep bringing up. Yes Bargnani is Italian but that doesn't mean that every European player is going to completely ignore their duties on the defensive end of the floor and lack some toughness. I like the direction the team is going in and if this season is a lockout and the Raps get a nice high pick (however that would work) for next year then we are starting to look like a team of real promise.

Who from the last few years would you have re-signed to get way over the luxury tax threshhold? Remember, the only way to get over the cap is to use exceptions (and the Raps have used the mid-level as much as anyone) or to re-sign your own players. The team has thrown money at kinds of players like Ford and Calderon - other than Bosh (who the offered max money to) who could they have spent money on to actually bring them way over the tax threshold?

There's lots wrong with the organization, but I've seen no evidence to suggest that its an unwillingness to spend money.

The Bargs draft was definitely weak but it's borderline silly not to argue that Gay, Roy and Aldridge would have all been much better picks. (Roy pre-injury would have held a ton of trade value). Saying that Aldridge doesn't fit with Bosh is a poor argument considering Bargs was clearly a worse fit and Aldridge is a much better player with far more trade/keep value today.

The funny thing is that on the 'inside the draft' special on Raps TV, the war room actually had Aldridge at the top of their draft board. Not sure why but it was clearly listed there on their white board.
