Multiply the coefficents (the numbers) by your players skills and add them up. Repeat for all the positions. Whichever is higher is his position. So, whenever his potential by any position formula hits the benchmark for star, he will cap. star has a range, and it could be high or low, you just don't know.

If you are a member of the USA offsite, there's a training planner there which shows you the current potential cap value relative to the guy's potential. And you can play around with changing the skill values and it will update the calculated best position and cap value. Very handy.
