I wonder if the GDP will remain optional indefinitely.

It seems that one potential scenario that could unfold is that teams only exercise it when facing bots or a handful of predictable teams, but then decline to use it against opponents who mix it up. Because there is no penalty for not using it, and a wrong guess can be costlier a risk than people might want to take in a game they can't afford to lose.

If I have a tough game against a team that could use any pace, it's like flipping a coin. (A three-sided coin, I suppose, but still.)

So if people start mixing it up enough to make the guess not worth making, then it defeats the whole purpose and it won't get used in competitive matchups.

I think that is the whole point though. The focus of this new feature was to add adversity to the game and force people to play more tactics, even if the GDP is rarely used in the future it has still made a positive effect on the game because not every team can play LI every single game.

I can buy that.

I know I have been persuaded to diversify further. I'll be using the PL to try many tactics/lineups this year, I suspect.

I personally will be using at least 3 different offensive tactics throughout the course of this season, if not more. Managing to trick my opponent into the wrong GDP has already allowed me to hold within a few points of a team that should have destroyed me. Anything to get a slight edge, since I know I'll be fighting to avoid relegation this season.

In many leagues, especially as you go up in division, there tends to be more parity, or at least more teams who are close in ability. The GDP can be the difference in more games in that case.

But you're right that we don't really have a good estimate of the strength of the effect. That's gonna take more time, and will be messy for a bit, but that's the fun of the game IMO.

I will probably update the tactic use again after the 5th-6th game for all of the leagues and see how it has changed/stayed the same and then again at the midpoint of the season (if i remember).

In my opinion the gdp is laughable. The only time it will ne used in normal league play will be from teams that are inferior to whom they are playing. Also the data gained on it thus far is unreliable. The only way to gain good data on how it works is on the nt/u21 stages in scrimmages where the lineup can be identical from game to game.

I'm not saying it will be completely useless but I am saying it will be a desperation move by teams who wouldn't come close without it.

So.... a desperation move to you... is, looking at "game film" and "analyzing play calls by your opponents"..... isn't that what's commonly known as coaching? So you think "Coaching" is a "desperation move"? ....I'm just checking here...

My personal opinion, is that if you are not using the GDP, or at least trying to use it, then you deserve to lose every game to people that do utilize it or try to. To me it represents coaching. Since we can't control timeouts, or substitutions, or change defenses mid game, like what is able to be done in real basketball, this at least lets us prepare like a real coach would prepare, thus somewhat doing the "defensive switches" for us, only its unseen by us.
(65836980) That was my win yesterday, only made possible by GDP. Was it a desperate move? I had the inferior team, I would not have won without it, but since the guy ONLY plays base offense and m2m despite being the most active manager in forums in our league, was I unworthy of the win?

Does being the better coach or smarter coach or more prepared coach make you "desperate"?

I understand this is your opinion and you are entitled to it. But understand that your opinion has no data for its basis, and sounds very naive and ..... close-minded, to me.

I am not trying to offend you.

I thought I saw something about this in another thread but cant find it. How is inside isolation not an inside tactic? I chose that my opponent would focus inside and he played inside isolation and in the box score it says I chose the wrong focus. (65837157)

From the tactics page in the game manual:

Isolation offenses: The team will try to find their best offensive player and clear out an area for him to create his own shot. There are two types of isolation offenses (both are considered as having a balanced focus by the GDP):
