Merchandise is based off % of Salary and of course player rankings. When your player is the league leader in RB he should and will generate some merchandise.
The reason your player and the writer player are generating 0$ is because they did not play the minimum required league games to qualify for merchandise calculation!
Chen played his 5th league game only on Tuesday, and on the day before (Monday) he didn't have enough league games to qualify.

I read very times the same questions.
May be is possible to add a label in red on players profile like "this player not generated mercha because he not played X games".
Or
"Your player will be generate mercha after X played games"
edit: or a icon in a mercha details in his row, to indicate in cannot generate mercha, with some tooltip
