Saturnino Samara steps up big time to help Philippines U21 hold off Pakistan U21, 103-88 (76570)

Beirut, Lebanon -- The score after the first half was 51-42 in favor of the Philippines U21. It was generally a lackluster performance considering all the firepower the Filipino-based team has in their arsenal compared to Pakistan U21. But in the third quarter, they outgunned their opponents, 33-12, and finish the quarter with a huge 30-point lead, 84-54. That's all the Philippines team needed to get the win.

Leading the charge for the Filipinos was Saturnino Samara, who scored 36 points on an impressive 15 of 23 shooting clip, including 6 three pointers made. Manny Emil Ricamona almost got a double-double with 18 points and 9 assists, while Juan Lustre chipped in 11 points.

On the other side, Afshin Atabay did an excellent job on exposing most of the mismatches and scored 20 points, but it wasn't enough to steer Pakistan U21 to victory. Arvin Majidi and Hafiz Haque added 16 and 13 points, respectively.

Philippines U21's next opponent will be Macau U21, which is scheduled on October 14, 11:00PM, Manila Time. See you there and please continue to support our National Teams!

Alan Clifford Pore's double-double powers Pilipinas U21 to victory over Macau U21 (76572)

Beirut, Lebanon -- A huge 24 points, 20 rebounds output from Alan Clifford Pore helped Philippines U21 beat Macau U21, 87-67. This is Philippines U21's 3rd straight victory and they now hold a 3-0 record in the ongoing Asian U21 tournament.

Macau U21 managed to keep the game close in the 2nd quarter, 24-27, but after that, the Filipino-based team hadn't had much problems dealing with Macau U21 in this game. But, Coach Leo mentioned in the post-game interview that he's making a few more adjustments to prepare for the second round, which will start on the 18th of November.

Saturnino Samara scored 18 points, but on 7 of his 23 field goal attempts. It seems like Macau U21 were aware of his scoring prowess, as evidenced in his previous game where he scored 36 points against Pakistan U21. Manny Emil Ricamona had a decent all-around game with 16 points, 5 assists, 3 rebounds and 3 blocks. Luis Irueta hauled 20 rebounds, and together with Pore's 20 rebounds, the 2 starting bigmen for the Philippines grabbed more rebounds than the whole Macau U21 team (40-39).

Xie Xuanning led Macau U21 with 19 points and 10 rebounds and 6 assists, while Zheng Lianjie and Zhang Tianping chipped in 17 and 13 points, respectively. Macau U21 falls to 1-2 in the standings.

Kazakhstan U21 is next on Philippines U21's schedule. The game will be on October 21, 11:00 PM, Manila Time. See you there and please continue to support our National Teams!

Philippines U21 gets back on the winning track, routs U.A.E. U21 (77235)

Beirut, Lebanon -- Philippines U21 went on a rampage from the get-go as they blasted U.A.E. U21 in the first quarter, 27-7, en route to a wire-to-wire win by the Filipinos, 91-66. The Filipinos' defense limited the Emiratis to just 29.3% field goal shooting.

Servando Tanay led the Philippines side in scoring with 19 points on 9 of 16 field goal shooting. Leonard Delmonte almost got a double-double with 18 points and 9 rebounds, while Rogelio Martinez was a spark off the bench, scoring 16 points. Ameen Ababneh Abed-Hossein powered the U.A.E. side with 22 points. The only other double digit scorer was Osman Musa, who scored 11 points with 4 rebounds and 4 assists. U.A.E. U21 falls to 1-2, and could be in danger of not making the playoffs with contenders, Indonesia and Hong Kong, up next in their schedule.

On December 10th 12:00mn (Manila Time), it will be Philippines U21 versus Macau U21. It will be the second meeting between these two teams, with Philippines U21 winning in their first matchup. Please continue to support our National teams.

Rogelio Martínez leads Philippines U21 to an impressive win over Macau U21 (77238)

Beirut, Lebanon -- It was a tight first quarter with both teams not giving an inch of space in terms of scoring, but Philippines U21 pulled away from their opponents in the second and third quarter to end the game in a blowout fashion, 111-72. This was Philippines U21's second win over Macau U21 in this tournament.

Leading the way for the Filipinos was Rogelio Martínez with 27 points. He had 17 points in the first half to help blow the game wide open. Saturnino Samara was the second highest scorer for the Philippines with 18 points while Sabino Margarico added 17 points off the bench. Meanwhile, the bigmen trio of Norberto Cena, Luis Irueta and Francis Bayoneta amassed a total of 32 rebounds and 13 assists, showing their rebounding and playmaking prowesses.

Hong Tingguo collected 19 points to lead Macau U21, followed by Zhang Tianping with 14 points, and Zhang Xianlei with 13 points. With this loss, Macau U21 bows out of contention for a semifinals stint, even if they win against Japan U21, their next opponent.

As for Philippines U21, Indonesia U21 is up next in their calendar (December 17, 12:00mn, Manila time). But because of Indonesia U21's surprising loss against U.A.E. U21 earlier, the Indos' path to a semifinals slot became a lot murkier. If Indonesia U21 won earlier, they just need to win against Philippines U21. But now, they need to win next week, by 57 points or more.

Again, please support our National Teams. To those who are managing current U21 players, we're near the homestretch, so please be more mindful of the game shape of your player/s. We have 2 training updates left.

Points Leaders:
Rogelio Martínez - 27 points
Saturnino Samara - 18 points
Sabino Margarico - 17 points

Luis Irueta - 12 rebounds
Francis Bayoneta - 10 rebounds

Indonesia U21 staves off Philippines U21's comeback attempt, deals Philippines U21 their second loss in the tournament (77240)

Beirut, Lebanon -- Indonesia U21 delivered a great performance to keep Philippines U21 at bay, and ended up with the W, 87-85. Indonesia's lead went by as much as 13 points, 64-51 in the middle of the third quarter, but the Filipinos didn't let down as they tried to mount a comeback in the fourth quarter. It didn't end well though for the Philippines as Rogelio Martínez's final 3 point heave missed. Both teams ended up with 3-2 record, but Philippines U21 secures the last semis slot via points differential. Indonesia U21 needed to win by 57 points or more, but they only ended up with a 2-point win. This also gives the Philippines at least a Bronze medal, but they'll have a chance to get a better podium finish in the semis.

The Indonesians were led by Engel Juhana with 28 points, while Junior "The Hawk" Tuah (Sorry, I can't help giving him that nickname) contributed 21 points. Habibi Isman scored 14 points, on top of 8 rebounds, 6 assists and 1 steal.

On the other side, Brian Quiogue, first-time starter, delivered a double-double, 25 points and 12 rebounds. Servando Tanay and Rogelio Martínez continues their double-digit scoring streaks with 19 and 17 points, respectively.

The semis matchups are already set:
Philippines U21 vs China U21
Australia U21 vs Hong Kong U21

These matches will most likely be scheduled on Saturday, December 21, 12:00mn (Manila time). The winners will go to the Finals on Monday/ Tuesday, while the losers get another shot at a World Cup ticket via World Cup Barrage, same day as the Continental Finals.

Points Leaders:
Brian Quiogue - 25 points
Servando Tanay - 19 points
Rogelio Martínez - 17 points

Rebounds Leaders:
Luis Irueta - 15 rebounds
Brian Quiogue - 12 rebounds

China U21 gave Philippines U21 a nightmarish loss, punches ticket to the Finals and World Cup (77543)

Beirut, Lebanon -- It was indeed a nightmare of a loss for Philippines U21 as China U21's impregnable zone defense limited their opponents to just 49 points in the whole game, and just 5 points in the fourth quarter.

The game was somehow close in the first half, with China U21 only leading by 7 points, 36-29. But, a 10-0 blitz by the Chinese to begin the third quarter gave them the cushion that they need to secure the win, 81-49, and more importantly, a ticket to the World Cup and at least a Silver finish. They will face the winner of the other semifinals match, Hong Kong U21, for a no holds barred battle for the Gold trophy.

Meanwhile, Philippines U21 and Australia U21 will get another shot at a World Cup stint via World Cup Barrage on December 23-24, same day as the Finals. Opponents will be revealed later, Saturday afternoon, which could be from Europe or the Americas.

Chai Hengde and Mao Daliang muscled their way through their opponent's zone, and score 15 and 14 points, respectively, to lead China U21. They also grabbed a total of 22 rebounds. As a team, they outrebounded their counterparts, 59-39.

On the other side, Saturnino Samara and Juan Lustre were the only bright spots for Philippines U21 as they collected 16 and 12 points, respectively. China's defense held them to just 23.4% field goal shooting, and forced Philippines U21 to take ill-advised shots.

Again, please support our National Teams, especially this coming Monday/ Tuesday. This is a must-win game for us.

Points Leaders:
Saturnino Samara - 16 points
Juan Lustre - 12 points
