FIFA is currently pretty bent on breaking new ground/opening new frontiers. When the USA got the WC back in the 90's, they benefited for that trend -- America was pretty indifferent to soccer (at that level), but FIFA saw it has a huge potential market to open up.

FIFA pushed for South Africa really hard. You think South Africa was really the "best" place to host a WC? Is there infrastructure competitive with America or Europe? Hell no...but FIFA wanted a WC in Africa. The said part is they are these hugely expensive stadium all over South Africa now and people without running water & sewage not too far away. I wonder if it was really the best use of their money...

Now FIFA picks Russia (first Eastern Bloc country) and Qatar (first Arab/Middle East country) to host World Cups. You think the fix was in? Or maybe FIFA has different metrics than you or I?

I don't think FIFA cares if you already have world class stadiums or you build them from scratch. Whether you have outstanding infrastructure, or you have to upgrade them. They make the same pot of gold regardless.

Until they, like the IOC, sees lots of red on the books. Then, they will come running to the US to say, "Save us!"

We'll get the WC in 2026, only to wipe out the debts.

Actually, I think FIFA will make a small mint with every WC. Its the various countries that are paying for all the stadiums and infrastructure.

Sorry guys, I have to take full responsibility for Qatar getting the WC and not USA. I was personally involved with the design of the coolest 5-a-side showcase stadium in the history of the world. (I helped design the cool-ass solar powered cooling system). Lol.

By the time 2022 rolls around, that'll be 28 years since we had it.

32 and counting — and we care a bit more about soccer than you guys. ;)

You'd never know it by the team you put on the pitch in South Africa.

we even won one of those tacky golden statues in the recent past, IIRC.

And the Carolina Panthers made it to a super bowl six years ago.

(by the way we haven't hosted the olympic games since rome 1960. hell, we can't even get the f'ing european football championships, the last time was in 1968…)

Sounds like some serious problems with your country there. Maybe you should stop talking with your hands so much.

to bring back the old topic of "why qatar and not the US"...i think its pretty clear what happened:

look, here we have an organization in Charge to give away one of the sought after Events. It cares for well organized tournaments and the expansion of their markets. Besides the members of the boards are prone to bribing.

So, what do you need for an successful bidding?

you need safety, a large market and the prospect of well organized games. This is the case for most bids (seeing Qatar standing for entire Arabia...)

AND THEN you should be best buddies with a lots of board member guys....

if you look in the past you see why qatar has it now:

When the house was burning for Sepp Blatter (past rally for reelection), who was his best buddy? right, the sheikh of Qatar. He even lent him his personal jet to make a couple of campaign trips...as a thnk you he held a FIFA Get-together in Qatar in April, after which he said things like " he sees the bidding of Qatar as very strong. Well, the technical commission held their bidding for the weakest by far (as Russias too, by the way...), but thats nothing Sepp Blatter really cares about. He used this double bidding process as an thank you for old friends, before he leaves. He already mentioned that the FIFA will not give away 2 WCs in one process anymore...

so, having said all that, here is my advice:

"HELLO USA; IF YOU WANT THE WORLD CUP YOU WILL HAVE TO BUY IT LIKE EVERYONE ELSE!"
