The Mabunay and Generoso Show

Playing catch up all game long Team Pilipinas looked headed into another loss this time against the Australian U21 squad but things changed in the last 5 minutes of the game when reserves SG Niel Mabunay and SF Mitchell Loonie Generoso came into the game.

Trailing 71 to 69 In the 3:47 mark of the 4th quarter Generoso drove to the hoop and was fouled in the act of shooting by Harry McNicholas. Generoso calmly shoot both free throws to tie the game. A rebound from an Australian team miss in the ensuing play by Mabunay was push up the court and Mabunay passed the ball to Generoso for a big time dunk giving Philippines a two point lead that led to a 30 second timeout by Australia.

Mabunay stole the ball when play restarted and passed the ball inside to Generoso but Generoso saw a wide open Mabunay and passed the ball back to him which Mabunay confidently shoot from the top of the key to added another 2 points to the lead 71 to 75. Another great defense lead to another scoring opportunity for the Pilipinas squad which Mabunay again spearheading the offense passing inside to Generoso scoring on a driving layup. The Pilipinas team never relinquished the lead after that and went on the win 85 to 77.

A very relieved Lolo Smithz was seen smiling like crazy after the game after spending the entire game pouting and cursing. "To tell you frankly at the 3rd quarter when Australia had a 10 point lead I thought that was it for us but our boys stepped up and made the game close to end the third quarter with a 3 point deficit only. It was a magical 1 minute and 21 seconds when Mabunay and Generoso tag teamed to make those terrific offensive plays. It was the game changer simply amazing to watch. Great very great and important win for us. Both of them are heroes of this game in my book."

"Luis Angelo Rubi was again magnificient scoring 16 points and pulling down 19 rebounds. Inserto starting at PG had 11 assists while Joey Castellano had U21 high 17 points and Eric Melendrez chipping in 11 points also."

"Next we face Kazakhstan then Macau then top favorite to win our pool Hong Kong. Hopefully by the time we meet Hong Kong our boys will have improved much to give us a decent chance of winning against them."

Calm Before the Storm

Two successive blowouts against Kazakhstan (57 point win) and Macau (48 point win) saw the Pilipinas U21 squad with a perfect 3-0 record in the second round of Season 22 U21 Asian Championships in Hong Kong.

Lolo Smithz wasn't in a smiling mood though when asked if the Pilipinas U21 team could win it all this season. "There is no time to rejoice as of now. Our next game is crucial against one of the top favorite this season the Hong Kong U21 team. Whoever wins this game will most likely be the one who will face China for the finals. If we lose the Hong Kong game there is still a very dangerous and vastly improved Indonesian team waiting for us for our last game. Need to win at least one game in order for us to advance in the semis. Hopefully we will win both so that we won't face China in the semifinals."

"Some say when many minds and thoughts are thinking the same thing it produces something powerful enough to alter destiny. Whether it is true or not I urge the Pilipinas BB community in wishing our team the best in the game against Hong Kong. Many thoughts melding togehter producing something awe aspiring. God Bless the Pilipinas U21 team!"

Man of the Hour

Granada Arena, Hong Kong

Dispo! Dispo! Dispo! Dispo! Dispo!

The name Dispo could be heard being chanted loudly by the Pilipinas fans after an amazing Pilipinas U21 86 to 76 win over highly fancied Hong Kong U21 squad. Outnumbered by the loud home crowd, the Pilipinas fans were shouting Johnas Dispo's all game long as he had a superb game with 24 points scored together with 8 rebounds 1 block and one assist.

Dispo scored 16 first half points and while scoring only 8 points only in the second half he held the HK small forwards to 7 out of 26 shooting. Pong Redona a last minute call up had a monster U21 debut as he scored 10 points in 5 out of 6 shooting. Starting Guards Joey Castellano and Francis Inserto made 7 assists each to help the Pilipinas U21 squad tremendously.

"Johnas Dispo was the key to our win tonight. He was amazing in the first half scoring and the whole game defensively." gushed Lolo Smithz in a post game interview. "Our team was lucky to carve out a hard fought win tonight as we had very bad game shape on our front court and one of our top point guards is down with an injury. HK had its share of injuries also with tis top two centers out so it also contributed to our win greatly plus their monster PG had very bad game shape."

"In a game where our team strength faltered our back court picked up the slack to enable us to win. With Indonesia our last opponent in the 2nd round losing in a buzzerbeater upset the Pilipinas U21 team is through to the semis of this seasons U21 Asian Tournament. 3 more games to go and hopefully destiny will shine upon the Pilipinas U21 squad to enable us to win it all."
