The coach will substitute out as he sees fit, but player X will still be given priority, moreso than if the PG spot was left blank. Also, if you're winning by enough (20+) that it becomes "garbage time," the coach will empty the bench regardless of your priorities. If you think this might happen, set the roster 9 or less players so there aren't enough bench player to sub out your trainee.

I tried in a couple of PL games and while it seemed to work ok I had my C with very bad passing and little OD playing 38mins @ PG. And his rating and stats were rather bad.

did you set the substitution pattern as "Strictly follow" or "let coach decide"?

You definitely have to do LCD. With SFDC and a blank lineup, very often you'll see bigs playing PG.

I haven't done any testing with this, but is it possible that if you use SFDC and a blank lineup that it uses the bot lineup selection criteria with the highest salary player at PG, etc?

This has happened to me because I've accidently left it on 'strictly follow depth chart'. Make sure you use 'let coach decide' with blank lineup and you Center won't be playing big minutes at PG.

Isnt that what happens to bots, the AI makes their highest salary players play at PG then SG and so on , and most of the highest paid players in this game are centers . Perhaps someone has more data on this because it looks to me that if you leave it on 'strictly follow' with a blank lineup then the AI will set the lineup similar to bot teams.

I think I did let coach decide. Will try in my PL game tonight and see if same thing happens.

The think you don't notice about blanks until you use them a lot is that they cope the best with the unexpected. Your star C gets injured in the first two minutes then your backup will play 46 minutes in strictly follow depth chart and if he fouls out you could have a PG playing C. A blank ensures that when things go worng they don't escalate.
