First Surprisingly Easy Win of the Worlds

After playing listlessly for the first couple of games Marc Madrigal finally woke up from his zombie state and score 7 first half points to help Pilipinas U21 win an easy 97 to 77 win over Indonesia. Madrigal was feeling it as he pounded the paint early leading to early foul trouble for Indonesian star player behemoth center Sutisna Istianto. Madrigal's defense against Isianto was instrumental in holding him to 2 1st half points. Madrigal end the game with 17 points 10 rebounds and 1 steal.

Piao Dakun scored zero this game as he was fouled fragrantly in the 2nd quarter managing to play only 15 minutes but he managed to do 5 assists and 3 rebounds. Beningno Besa took up the scoring cudgels instead with a very impressive 20 points 12 rebounds 3 blocks and 2 steal performance. Star SF Denaque finaly played a u21 game with getting injured early and was also instrumental in the win with a 14 point 7 rebound 3 steal performance with Justino "Da Bull" Margarico adding 14 points 4 rebounds 1 assists and 1 block to his statline.

"Indonesian squad played with more effort against us but it was evident they were tired after playing 3 grueling repechage games. We were also lucky that their front court had so so game shape that enabled our front court to dominate them early." Lolo Smithz said in a post game interview. "I was surprised we were leading 27 points at the end of the third. I thought before the game it would be much closer. It was good also that we were leading that big so I rested the starting 5 early."

"I am happy Mr. "Jamby" Madrigal woke up from his slumber and played well. That one hour of ranting by me during training must have done wonders. We have 3 games to go so we need to win at least 2 to safely enter the 2nd round of the World Championships."

"Again I would urge managers to watch the game shape of their players. Several of our best players can't even crack the lineup because of very bad game shape. We need our best in order to win. I appeal to the our managers to help me as the success of the Pilipinas team is a great honor for all of us Filipinos."

Hopeless in Rossiya

After a brave stand Team Pilipinas lost to Brasil 102 to 90 in their U21 matchup last night. Brasil dominated the game early on and even with an early injury to starting Brasil shooting guard Leme couldn't stop them from walloping the Pilipinas squad. Starting Pilipinas PF Besa also crashed out of the game due to an injury.

Lolo Smithz was visibly upset after the game and reporters on hand could see he was about to explode.

"Our team simply sucks. We are just good at the regional tournaments but when given the chance to compete at the highest levels in the world stage we just couldn't muster that drive and strength within us to win. If there is someone to blame then let the blame fall on me. Everything starts and ends with the U21 manager. Maybe I'm just too old that I can't get through to our managers for them to try to maintain better game shape for their players. Some of our best players can't even crack the lineup because of bad game shape. So frustrating and a waste of talent really."

"The Silver Trophy we won last season and the automatic qualification bonus will all go to waste the way we are playing right now. Two more games in the 1st round hopefully we can win both of them as win loss records are carried to the next round."

Easy Pickings

As expected Team Pilipinas steamrolled Al Jazair in their U21 game last night by a score of 143 to 65. The Pilipinas squad played mostly second stringers but still managed an impressive 78 win against a mostly 20 yo Al Jazair lineup.

The score in the first quarter was 39 to 24 with Team Pilipinas players happily smiling about their lead but at the 3 minute break they got a tongue lashing from Pilipinas U21 manager Lolo Smithz reminding them about the importance of a large win as point differential and win loss standings are carried to the second round.

After the earful they got Team Pilipinas did their very best to limit Al Jazair from scoring only allowing them 15, 14 and 12 points in the next three quarters.

When asked after the game why he was mad at his players Lolo Smithz had this to say. "It's been a frustrating season so far. Bad game shape always for our best players and in the locker room our players were already too overconfident saying out loud that this game was a walk in the park. Very sloppy for them to let the opponent score 24 first quarter points. I was aiming for a 90 point lead but could only manage sadly a 78 point win (same as the Brasil win against Al Jazair). We need the point differential."

"Tonight also saw the first appearance in the World Cup of "Tsinoy No. 4" 20 yo guard Alfonso Chan. Based on the game today I think Chan has the goods to surpass Ulan Cantara as next seasons U21 best player. Chan is more steady and takes better shots than Ulan. By the end of the season he should be a very deadly shooter."

"We are already assured of a 2nd round spot win or lose against our last opponent Latvia. But if you ask me what are our chances to reach the semis? My answer would be slim very slim unless our players start to shape up and have better game shape because all the skill in the world will be nothing if their game shape is bad. Your prayers are still needed for a miracle to happen. A very big miracle is needed."

"In Misfits We Trust"

A sign from a Team Pilipinas fan says it all "In Misfits We Trust" but those fans were in shock as they saw the starting lineup.

No Besa, Madrigal, Dakun, Daypuyat, Margarico. Instead it was a team composed of mostly 2nd stringers Pacquing at SG, Tenosa and Emolaga at the front court with regular starters Pacanan at PG and Denaque at SF. Emolaga was inspired by his first start at PF that he made 9-11 shoots ending with 20 points 5 rebounds and 2 assists while fouling out early in the 4th quarter. But it was Tenosa who showed he can man the center spot as he top scored with 27 points while pulling down 13 rebounds.

Game was close 23 all in the first quarter, 46 to 51 in the second with Latvia leading, then Pilipinas lead by 1 in the end of thrid with a score of 74 to 73. In the last 1 minute and a half to go Latvia led by 1 point but Denaque calmly sank 4 straight free throws after 2 consecutive fouls by Latvia to give Team Pilipinas the lead for good and winning by a score of 98 to 94 in an upset of epic proportions.

The Latvian coach couldn't believe what happened and kept on saying after a friendly handshake with Lolo Smithz after the game "I can't believe we lost. There was no way we could lose."

Lolo Smithz was seen grinning from ear to ear like a child who just opened his presents on Christmas day as he joyfully answered questions thrown at him. When ask why that weird starting lineup Lolo Smithz answered. "I wanted to run Run ang Gun but again game shape problems prevented me from running plays I wanted."

"The odds were stacked against the Pilipinas squad that every odds maker said Pilipinas would lose for sure so I fielded Tenosa and Emolaga instead to see what they were capable of and to my surprise they played very well. Denaque played badly really throwing up ill advice long range shots the whole game long but he salvaged a win for us with those 4 free throw attempts in the end. Cool as ice."

"But the main reason really why we won was overconfidence by the opposing side. They kept on changing their lineup as if they were toying with us. I was thinking if we could just keep it close we would have a chance for an upset and in the end our prayers were answered. They also gave up 39 foul shots to us (from 28 personal fouls) which we made 25 of them missing 14. Free throw shooting is really one of our weakness. They threw up more shots 42 to 84 as compared to 36 to 68 for us and they made more assists 27 to 16 but we made more rebounds 42 to 36."

"Overall it was mostly second stringers who played this game and most of our best starters were as usual having bad game shapes again (some are really hopeless). You can just imagine what we could accomplished with the best lineup we can field. This game is truly one of the best ever I have coached. When you win a game you are expected to lose the feeling is so amazing."

"Let's see who the "Misfits" will upset in the second round. Never underestimate a cornered animal."

Mischievous Misfits Strikes Again

For the second straight game Team "Misfits" Pilipinas was not given much of a chance against ranked 2nd in the world Team Poland but the Misfits showed anything is possible playing with more effort and focus winning 87 to 75. The Misfits were inspired by the presence of many times Pilipinas cup and league 1 champ Jsmoove of Celestial Wrath who gave a pep talk to them in the start of the second quarter.

Game was tied at 18 in the first quarter while Poland took a 2 point lead in the end of the first half after a furious run when they were behind by 6 to end the quarter at 42 to 40. Third and fourth quarter saw the Misfits play inspired ball by allowing only 15 and 16 points scored in the last two quarters to end up with a 12 point win.

Poland supporters were in shock with some of them it was virtually impossible for them to lose and one even commented they got knocked out by Pacquiao, Pilipinas most beloved sports figure. Lolo Smithz again was all smiles grinning like crazy after another upset of epic proportions. No Dakun, Yap and Daypuyat again to help Team Pilipinas and an injury to Emolaga worsened things but still was enough to win again.

"We came into the World Cup as underdogs and we had nothing to lose and everything to gain. After that epic win against Latvia we realized that anything is possible. For the second straight game an overconfident Poland team again was toying with us with their lineup and again their strategy blew up in the faces of our opponents. But I always have to admit they played with a weaker lineup as their top two guards are out of the World Cup due to injuries."

"We won the game with team effort everyone contributed a part to this win but I have to say Ulan "The Rainmaker" Cantara impress me most with his poise today. He top scored for 17 points grabbed 5 rebounds and made 3 assists and 1 steal while also committing 5 turnover but his shot selection was impressive not like before that he would ball hog the ball. He really deserves the praises many are saying to him as the best Pinoy player next season in the U2 squad and a future superstar for the Pilipinas NT team if he continues to play like he did today."

"I really hope USA will also see us as weak and toy with us also. All I'm saying is if a team is good enough to reach the World Cup don't disrespect them by not playing to your best. Any team good enough to reach the 2nd round can upset any team. I am already satisfied with our showing this season so a semis spot (wishfully hoping) would really be a blessing in disguise. Can our "Misfits" achieve something remarkbale? Three games more to go and help pray for Team Pilipinas for them to achieve unparalleled success this season!"
