Yeah passing is important so if I were you I'd train passing. Personally I value defense so much it seems to me teams that have players with salaries half as others who do better all just have ridiculously good defense and its why they are the best so i go for defense even if other skills are lacking. with my guards ideally want to set my players to have a 1.5 OD ratio to handling/passing so if a guy has OD of 9 I'd target HA/PA of 6, if say he had HA/PA of 5 i train HA/PA but if he had 7 I'd go for OD but that's just a generalization not a rule of thumb, everyone situation is different but you sound competent in what you doing so if I were you I'd stick with your guy on what you think you should do.
