here is my advice (can follow juice's as well):
1) get a better trainer (at least level 3)
2) get trainees - guards or forwards/centres
3) make sure your players have at least respectable defense (inside for forwards/centres and outside for guards small forward) - such players can be found on the transfer list for cheap
4) only spend more than $50,000 on trainees (at least for the first season or two)
that takes care of setup. for game tactics, it really depends on your opponent. probably at first, you will have to concentrate on the outside (if you train guards) or on the inside (if you train centres/forwards). just make sure you balance training offense (jump shot or inside shot) with defense (inside defense or outside defense).
you will soon figure out that defense is more powerful than offense in this game.
