I dunno whether you need 700K to get 5th - Teams like Aussie and Yoda were running more like 600K, and managed to get second.

So if we go down to 600K wage budget, there goes $1.1m of the difference.

A team that finishes 8th gets less income (I assume) than one that finishes 5th. Lets say that's around 50K a week (it may be more, or less, I have no idea).

So there goes 550K of that.

Then the following season in D2, teams that get relegated get hit pretty heavily in crowd numbers no? So in order to repromote, a team would have to run a wage budget at least at the breakeven point. Maybe beyond. While the team in the ABBL is probably earning around 150K a week if they are at 600K wages.

So that's another $1.65m of difference gone.

Plus the tanking team probably exits the cup earlier than a team going for 5th. That could be another 100-200K or difference gone.

Taking all that into account, and the team going for 5th comes out ahead.

Yeah, it's still too easy to buy back up. Biggest problem isn't tanking but actually player values. Too many top class players going for cheap as chips. Probably an excess of supply and need to somehow reduce the number by either reduce free agency by like 80% or reduce the number of Superstar+ potential players in the draft. More mid tier potential type draftees instead.

I'm aware that you don't want to punish new promotees who simply can't compete. But I think the system that encourages those teams to simply give up is silly. And the way tanking has been the past few seasons, these teams aren't making a small profit, they are making a large profit and getting a silly advantage. And its no fun for anyone involved (after all, that's what this game is about...).

I'd much rather the system encourages such teams to have a 550K - 600Kish roster, be competitive, earn a small profit, and if they relegate, so be it - they still go down with a bit of cash.

The other issue with this, is its not just new promotees using this system. Teams like yourself and bryce would have had no problems being playoff teams this season - but rather chose to tank. That suggests the system is flawed.

sitting around 6-7 all season, my merch was only 40k and gate receipts only 430k ... 140k or so a week less than what I was getting last season hovering around 4th - 5th most of the season.

but this is your like 4th or 5th season in the abbl.
I would imagine a new abbl promotee would have no problem filling out the stadium. 500k from arena sales compared to 430k thanks to the promotion boost.

there is no problem with tanking to save a bit of cash... like whitebeard said.. the problem is that quality players can be bought for next to nothing...

we wouldnt even be having this convo if good players went for a lot more, cos back in the day 1 season of tanking can only buy 1 good player at most... now u can buy a whole team and instantly compete.

back in the day it would take ages for a div3 or div2 team to build up a team to promote, now you see div 3 teams with 500k+ salaries and div2 teams with 600k+ salaries.

thats the salaries of yodabig and aussie pride all season whom finished second in their respective conferences LOL

Totally agree with you (plus one) however the change in floor will certainly reduce the size of the carrot.

I agree that I have an unfair advantage should I promote back up with my current bank balance if the player market is not fixed.

Big win for me was not tanking but the fact that I sold players for reasonable money in a market which has continued to fall

I have not ended up anywhere near as rich as I thought I would though, as I got hit hard on attendance and because I tried to train young trainees who have lost value, despite the expense of having a top trainer

Kind of ironic my first season in the ABBL i was critised for heaps (most of the time justly) one of the things I was criticised for was not tanking.

Truth is despite all my seasons playing the game I am so far in nous and ability behind the likes of Whitehead as a Manager its not funny.

Only just now (this last half season) starting to figure out some of his "ways"

You know I'm always glad to share information and I'm sure I'm not the only one. Surprisingly, I'm still learning more about this game. You got to know to adapt as things are always changing. Only question mark is whether or not one has the resources to do so. ;)

A couple of points here. Aussie and I did do well this season with fairly cheap rosters. This season at my most expensive I had a $673k roster after I bought Mottram but for most of the season I was around the $494k-566k mark and making quite a tidy profit. However judge me not by my salaries (and I assume Aussie too) as I spent seasons hunting out guys who would perform far better than I would pay them which is why I paid things like $2.5 million for guys with just $50k salaries.

What was obscene was back in season 18 taking I was making around $500k a week, although a lot less the last two, but add in the $1 million promotion money and I made a $7,000,000 profit that season. I was also able to turnover lots of my old players easily. It was soul destroying so thank goodness I had the India U21 team to run as well but well worth it in terms of team advancement. A pity about the draft as a $1 million draft pick would have been the icing on the cake.

Season 18 was also your first season in the ABBL hence you had a boost in the fansurvey

This season for me

attendences between 430 to 440K
TV 219K
Merchandise roughly 42 K

Staff salaries averaged 46K
Scouting averaged 30k
players wages 264K

Equals roughly 356K average weekly profit

But then consider Ive spent $ getting good staff and have brought trainees etc

So you tanked an ABBL season to make 7mil in cold hard cash...
In all my seasons in the ABBL, I have not had a bank balance of 7mil ever...

what I did was win enough games to secure 5th place, then tank. This season it did not pan out so well... In previous seasons it worked like a gem.

Most I ever had was 4mil when I blew 3.9mil on Wazza. That was in fact my first season in the ABBL.

I was planning on tanking this season as well until I saw baxter bogans and Direwolf tanking. Thats when i knew it would be a shit fight in the relegation series. I pretty much forfeited the first few weeks of this season. Ohh also because I was close to zero in cash and revenue LOL.

in other news, grats to mllama and manfrotto on the MVP.
