The think you don't notice about blanks until you use them a lot is that they cope the best with the unexpected. Your star C gets injured in the first two minutes then your backup will play 46 minutes in strictly follow depth chart and if he fouls out you could have a PG playing C. A blank ensures that when things go worng they don't escalate.

Blanks often, often have bizarre lineups for short periods and they do make you scratch your head sometimes and make you think they aren't working but overall they do really well as long as you don't care about minutes.
