This is true and since I've always trained and competed I will say that:
1) if you are also trying to win, training single position hurts less than 2 position training, for obvious reasons
2) Because of 1), training more than 4 guys while competing becomes a problem because you need to play 2 of them in at least a league game and it likely means losing that game
3) Training 3 guys single position is possible, it simply means playing with a handicap. Because of what has been discussed in this thread, at least 2 of the 3 trainees need to be able to stay on the floor without having to use a 5 man lineup. This is because playing a 5 man lineup reduces the options for managing minutes correctly for the whole roster (but it's still ok)
4) Managing GS while playing 3x 8 man lineups with 2 trainees, 3 starters and 3 backups each week makes it very hard to manage minutes, but it can be done with some luck. If you play 2x 5 man lineups it is impossible.
