Hi i would like to confirm something.
While i used to live in England i had a couple Turkish friends we used to talk over Constantinoupoli/Instanbul for hours...
there was a debate regarding the origin of the name Instanbul.
One version is that it means: the land of muslims
the other that it meant : victory of the muslims...
Do you know whether any of the above is correct?
i knew it derives from the Greek phrase "εἰς τὴν Πόλιν" [istinˈbolin] or in the Aegean dialect "εἰς τὰν Πόλιν" [istanˈbolin] (modern Greek "στην Πόλη" [stimˈboli]), which means "in the city", "to the city" or "downtown".
In any case its a beautiful city, the Greek made and the Turks preserve.
