Aussies down Malaysians, move to top spotThe u21 Australian team have flexed with strength overnight to force themselves into top position of the Asian Championship. The Aussies finished up 88-65 winners
(30120) The Malaysians did not go down without a fight, reading the Aussies tactics well in the first quarter and coming out on top 23-22 at the end of the first. But it was the Aussies who would clamp down on the Malaysians, shutting their scoring down, only allowing 42 points for the remainder of the game, while piling on 66 more of their own. The damage was done by all positions, but a special mention goes out to the Sfs in Christian, R mac Jnr, and Uggies, who between them only allowed one field goal to be scored on them for the match (from 15 attempts). It is this sort of defensive stance that gives the u21 Aussies the best chance to attack and win games, knowing at the other end the ball simply wont go in the bucket as many times ( a key strategy to winning in basketball).
Defensively, the centers also deserve a mention, holding massive Malaysian monster Steve Gabriel
(31214713) to 11 points while scoring more themselves at a higher fg%. The stats defy the odds from a salary perspective.
MVPs3 votes- Tubby Waugh- 14pts in 18 mins, top rebounder (9), 6-8 fg%, highest match rating (16.5).
2 votes- T Mac- Defensive job on Gabriel was outstanding, while piling on 13pts on 5-8 fg%, adding 8 boards and 2 assists.
1 vote- TP- 9 dimes, 9 points, 50% fg%.
With Philippines taking Taiwan down, Australia move into top spot of the table, playing Iran next week in match of the undefeated. What a tough schedule the team has drawn at this point of the tournament.
Thanks to all those contributing in any way. A big month ahead for the u21s. Get involved in the discussion and help us achieve our best!
