Interview with Microlol - Flow Gaming 11-2 (III.5)

1. Which state do you live in?

NSW, I live in the Sydney (the only city that matters in Australia)!

2. You took a long time to promote out of III.1 and have been around the game for numerous seasons now. What do you perceive to be the best way to succeed in this game?

I definitely took a long time to promote out of III.1 due to strong teams from D2 demoting to my old league, then proceeding to sweep the season. I was also pitted up against another saavy manager (The Supreme Team, who promoted a season before me) who was about a season's worth of progress ahead of me, hence I wasn't able to promote out of III.1 until the season after he did. Also, when I promoted to III.1, I was not the weakest team nor the strongest team. I think that's the worst place to be, as you don't win enough to fill up your arena consistently (at a good ticket price), and you don't get a good draft pick at all. It takes many seasons to save up for a significant arena upgrade. I found that the most stable and healthy way to promote is to buy a top notch trainer (also expensive) and either draft or buy a high quality trainee. This is what I did and it's paid off for me.

3. Which division do you think is stronger, III.1 when you promoted or your current III.5 division?

I think the current division I am in is much stronger than the one I promoted out of, as I easily swept the my championship season in III.1. III.5 has another quality team (Home Axis), I think the playoff finals between him and I will be very exciting and competitive. However, with that said, it's been two seasons and teams on average in every league have been improving at a rapid rate, I'm not sure as to how strong III.1 is now, but it will always hold a special place in my heart.

4. Do you think your team will have what it takes to win the title this season? Why or why not?

I think I definitely have the strongest and most well-rounded starting 5 in my division, bar injuries and game-shape mismanagement, I should be able to take the title this season and return to division 2. .

5. Who do you think your biggest challengers are for the III.5 title?

Home Axis is a team I have massive respect for, if I have any injuries or my players' game shapes aren't optimal, he should beat me, as the way the season is going, I believe he will have home court advantage over me in the finals. His starting 5 is not strong as mine, but he has a very strong bench and also a well-rounded team in general. If I don't pull ahead int he first three quarters, it will not look good for my team.

6. Is there any team in Australian BB who you have a long-standing rivalry with and why?

The Supreme team! My numerous seasons in III.1, both of us have been first and second respectively in the race for promotion (if we ignore the multiple teams throughout the seasons who have demoted from d2 that tank and go on to sweep d3), he is a good bloke and a smart manager, very similar to my management style, focusing on team infrastructure and future instead of one and done seasons.

Interview with Microlol - Flow Gaming 11-2 (III.5) (continued)

7. Who is your favourite player on your team?

I have a completely revamped team this season! They haven't been around long enough for me to make up my mind on this, however, I want to throw a special mention to Wallace Sarstedt, who was my team's first superstar. He was homegrown, my first real prospect, I single position trained him for four seasons (was unlucky not to make the U21 team) before he attracted attention internationally and I sold him for a large sum to the number 1 team in Slovenia!

8. Which team do you follow in the NBA? And who is your favourite NBA player?

I don't really follow a particular team, I just enjoy watching the game. However, I can tell you I was rooting for OKC in the finals! Unfortunately, it wasn't their time yet this year. I don't strictly have a favourite NBA player, but I love CP3, I miss the days when he would single-handedly win me fantasy seasons averaging 23-11-5-2 with insane percentages.

9. What is your favourite aspect of BB?

My favourite aspect of BB would have to be planning your team's path for the next four seasons and seeing it come to fruition, I love the moment when you know your team is the strongest in the division, knowing you were the weakest four or five seasons ago.

10. Having played in div II for a single season last season, what did you take away from that experience that will prepare you more for div II upon a possible return next season?

Sadly, I believe that tanking is way too attractive right now, it allowed me to save up a lot of money and also draft one of the best guards out of Australia that year (good luck with him iwen!). However, if I were to promote this season, I definitely do not plan to tank and hopefully stay competitive, vying for that number 5/6 spot. With that said, tanking has it's risks, you upset your fans, your arena doesn't fill up anymore, it throws a wrench into your economic balance. It'll be interesting to see how BB plans to deal with this.

Oh so you're the one who trained up Sarstedt and drafted Rylance.

Being faceless makes you all the more mysterious.

Similar to my situation except I has the equilivant to the 2000 NBA draft and there wasn't a good player in the entire draft. It is a season of pain but so worth it as now I have bounced back and currently have the 3rd best record in the ABBL despite just coming up from division II. I admit some of the success is illusiory as there is a ton of luck with injuries etc. However I hope that Microlol can drag that scary face back to division II next season and create havoc.
