Here's an average PFPG for all NBA teams:

I can't say what the standard deviation is, or if a team getting called for 7 fouls in an game happens so often (I think it's possible but would certainly be a rarity indeed, the record low is 5 set by Dallas at San Antonio, November 20, 1999).

This game models itself mostly on the NBA, but the number of fouls should also be based on a few other things besides what is typical. I'd expect lower divisions to have more fouls since defense isn't so good and players are a little more awkward on the offensive end, too. Just watch a few high school and college games and you'll see a "lesser" game with more foul-prone players. But when you also consider how many thousands of teams play in BB, there is just statistically bound to be teams that defy the typical trends. The main thing that requires metastats for analysis is whether or not the overall average number of fouls across all teams fits within the game engine target with a reasonable standard deviation. Rather than odd examples here or there cited as common (and I'm not saying they're not without seeing the big picture). But I know that my team averages 16.8 fouls per game, which is low by NBA standards (18.0 is the record low for a team during a season, done by Houston in 2001-2002), and my opponents are averaging almost 2 PFs less that my team in my team's games, so I see the point that the number of fouls is a bit low.

For the record, one of my all-time favorite players my team ever had is Ramón Mcgregor (4168577), who used to rack up fouls at a ridiculous rate. I loved him on my team since I would start him in games against my major rivals in the (deparved) hope he could injure some of the other teams' players (he scored at least two big injuries back in the day, as I recall). Sometimes, having these hyper-aggressive players on your team isn't such a bad thing, especially since BB hasn't yet really implemented a serious technical foul program in the game engine yet!

Great post chuhorn! It's nice to have real statistic :)

I absolutely agree with you. Also I think that experience should have more effects in foul-engine. One 18-year player should make more fouls then when he become 25-year old.

If I look just this season my team played something about 10 games where teams made less then 10 fouls. That is absolutely unrealistic!

I would like to hear what BB think about this topic. Are they even thinking about changing something in foul-engine?

Is it that the younger players are more foul-prone or is it that the NBA officials don't call a tight game? Maybe both, but how many times have you seen traveling (not a foul) and charges go uncalled that in "lesser" games would get called every time.

Also, NBA players seem to rake up a lot more technical fouls....but I think that's probably due to their entitled attitude.

I brought this issue up several seasons ago...I think when I looked into it, it seemed like fouls were about 20% less in buzzerbeater than the nba. I think making this number closer to the nba average would make the game better -- teams would need to suit up more players (as pointed out above) requiring more depth and also, it would encourage the training of another skill (foul shooting). Plus, foul shooting is fan-tastic!

I'd expected something else in this thread. More about the last minute, or should I say second.

To me it's unreal that when the clock is at 0 sec the team trying to catch up is still making that foul. Ok the game is lost anyway, so what do the 2 extra points mean??

it could mean a lot at the end of the season. In this game HCA is so important that those few extra FTs at the end can mean a diffrence.

I know a lot of effort has been put into the last minute, but it's still far away from ideal.

Also when you see a team come back 6 points without the leading team scoring, this run suddenly changes when the fouls get made. If the team is onmy 4 points behind with 45 seconds to play, don't foul yet, as the opponent didn't score the last minute and might not now. Chances are higher you will catch up if you don't change the current run, by handing them points from FTs where they struggled to make a field goal... Okay, if they DO score the field goal, that is ugly, but still I think you have a better chance to win.

They are not your friends; they dispise you. I am the only one you can count on. Trust me.

Late game fouling is really ridiculous...
Fouling a guy with 00:00 left on the clock when game is tied is really smart!

Not all players are smart. Some of them may be really stupid.

Are you suggesting Intelligence should be another skill? How would you train that one? Set an age minimum for BB players so that they have to play a year of college first? And what would happen if somebody noticed that players from some countries tended to have higher or lower Intelligence than players from other countries? The controversy that would ensue could rip this game apart!
