As with last week, several players close to a call up, but in the end narrowly missed out. With only 3 roster spots left I couldn't justify (to myself) using any more. There could always be emergencies and its better to have room for callups, especially with so many weeks remaining.

At half time things didn't look good. I could barely eat my burger (we brought food with us, none of us wanted to eat bagpipes while we listened to the Scots play their haggises.) We were six down. We were turning the ball over, not rebounding very well, and not really passing well.

The Scots had played their starters for most of the half, whereas our coach (I had nothing to do with it sadly) played our backups quite a bit more than usual, and so we had hopes that the second half might see them tire.

I'm sure they did, but we were back in the game before they'd tired and in the end ran out fairly comfortable winners. It was a very good second half performance to contrast with the poor first half.

Kaur, who isn't an SF but played there top scored. When you play a 3-2 there's no real necessity for a proper SF and so a guard fits there more easily than with man to man. He was also our best passer. And Ernesto Corral, as well as being our top scoring big man, also contributed 3 steals and 4 blocks.

This week was worse. I was actually feeling embarrassed by half time we were that bad. I felt the double wrong gdp guess was the cause and I really couldn't see the second half being different. Well, I was wrong about that too.

In Buzzerbeater, as in actual sport, sometimes the coaches make brilliant tactical decisions that get their teams the victory. And sometimes, like last night, coaches are idiots and get lucky. To be honest, I don't feel the gdp guess was that bad. However, I think my comment a couple of weeks ago about not gdping may have led our opponent last night to stay away from look inside. Either way I'm at fault.

Anyway, back to the game. I actually missed the start of the second half, (sandwiches), and by the time I returned we were actually back in the game. At this point I actually felt worse, because at least at half time we were so far behind that I'd thought the double guess wouldn't have made a difference.

What went right for us? Well, in the first half Lee Smith was shooting well, and was one of our bright spots, but we didn't seem to be getting the ball to him as often as we would have wanted. In the second half it was completely different. Everything seemed to revolve around him. I think I'm stating the obvious when I say his 47 points made him our MVP.

Other good things include the turnover difference, we only made 6 which is very good at any level. I may however need to look at my selections in future, without naming names it did appear that at least one backup should perhaps have been starting.

Two players made their first appearance for the team last night. Ewen MacIlvora, who was called up because a couple of guards were unfit came in as a backup, and Gregory Witt started and did what I expected him to do and then some, even managing to hit a 3pt shot.

I don't tend to single out players but for once I feel its important to do so with Witt. He wasn't drafted, he was the allstar 18yo on Titanic Turtles' start up team. He's an example of what a newbie can do with one of their original players. Admittedly not everyone receives on as good as Witt was but to make the u21 team as a 20yo is impressive. Another thing I'd like to point out is that Witt was called up because he has higher SB than most of the other bigs in the squad. At some point, if I stay on, I will simply stop picking players that don't have the SB I want.

This season will have to be my last. Its common for u21 bosses to have two terms so that they can take the 18yos from their first season to when they're 21, but I won't be able to do that. Two seasons are six months in total and as I would feel it would be unfair to quit the game while u21 coach, I feel unable to tie myself to the position beyond this season.

I think my post is clear, I did say I need the option to leave the game whenever I want and my sense of being fair to everyone would mean I couldn't quit while being U21 coach. Therefore I can't run for the u21 position next season. It doesn't mean I'm quitting now.

If anyone has been reading my posts lately in other threads, they'll know I'm not happy with some of the changes announced in this season's news post. I've said why in other threads, and I strongly believe they're going to change the game beyond a point where I'll be able to enjoy it.

Other reasons I can't comment on.

Now to a less sombre topic. First things first, thanks to Turtle and Bergkamp for their scouting duties this week. Both correctly deduced that Albania would predict that I'd play a fast tactic, which helped to convince me that low post was right for this week.

Of course they didn't suggest I pack the team with big men, but one of my idiosyncracies is that I like to be somewhat creative with my lineups. With the Wasps I've regularly played with four guards and when facing inside oriented teams I've played with two small forwards and two bigger men.

So I decided, in the absence of enough guards in good game shape with inside shooting to go with a big lineup. Scottie Batley, a PF played at SG, and Norman DeSimone, a PF, played at SF. Both were capable enough to play SF in any game and so I was sure they could manage in this game. DeSimone was our top rebounder, and Batley obviously top scored, so I think I can justifiably call it a success.

I'm not pointing this out to say I'm some kind of genius. I'm trying to show people that you don't have to play players in the positions they're listed at. That's only a guide. On my teams I like players who can play multiple positions. In fact, I'd say as you move up the leagues you should be looking at having players who are good both inside and outside. Well, at least as long as the BBs allow us to have lineups like that without breaking the bank.

It was a strong performance on monday, with I think our best ratings of the season. Again, lots of steals and blocks, which are massively important. Each one is a free possession. Stuart Duffie led the way with 4 steals, which together with his 2 blocks, 4 assists, 8 rebounds, 10 points and zero turnovers made him my man of the match, despite Batley's 23 points.
