From what I hear that last game was the dreaded "mouse wheel error".

Juice can correct me, but I think that's on old Hattrick reference. A national team coach (Belgium's?) played some brutal tactics (maybe no lineup at all?) and lost, and that was the excuse.

the TIE vs Canada makes some sense, so they can get something back for future, a chance to a second tier qualifier...

i thought it's simple... but i'll explain...

They only need to beat everyone else other than USA and Canada to make 3rd...

It is a good strategy to cut their losses, give the game up, give up the game vs USA as well, get a decent enthusiasm and win everything else, then go for 2nd chances...

because they already screwed up... and after that CT they had a very small chance at winning this game... so they regain their enthusiasm now EXACTLY to be able to beat Uruguay and the others... After the mess in first game, they can't realistically expect to auto-qualify... cut losses and go for second round...

Wasn't an episode of Corner Gas about this very topic?

Actually I think that was an episode of Little Mosque on the Prairie. I could see how it would be confusing though.
