I can tell your age, by the movies you chose to represent some of these directors...
Jon Favreau I would not be thinking Iron Man.... Tim Burton, not Alice in Wonderland.... James Cameron.... Yeah, have to concede that, as much as I love Aliens, both of those movies deserve the credit more.

Jon Favreau I would choose Swingers.
1. its what got him started really, and it launched Vince Vaughn's career, more so than Psycho did.

Cameron. Like I said, I'll cede him.

I don't really like going off the financially aspect, cause even with Cameron for example. Titanic in theaters... 4.25$ 1.75$ matinee when it came out.
Avatar 8.75$ 6.00$ matinee
Prices are just different. If we had to pay the same price movies cost now, for movies back when... Highest grossing film ever would be Star Wars, or Matrix, or Titanic even.

That's why I don't like going off the gross aspect of movies. I'll go over the quality of the movie, and directing all day. I'll go if it was a launching pad for an A-lister all day. (Nightmare on Elm Street original, not great, not bad, def B movie... but, Launched Johnny Depps career)

Iron Man for the re-launching? Or A Scanner Darkly?.... but yeah, very valid point for Robert Downey Jr. (far less annoying of an actor too).

Aliens Launched.... (if you can call it that), Bill Hudson (Twisters, Vertical limit) career... but yeah... not an actor whom's name is worth bringing up in conversation really.

Edit: typo

Bill Paxton :D who was playing a characted named Hudson. If you can't name a guy right, he isn't that famous. I would agree he is relatively known, but his career is mostly made by his seemingly friendship with James Cameron, he played in Terminator (who by the way as creator, I would reckon Cameron more for that than for Aliens, that fuckin' Terminator), Aliens and Titanic. He is algo THE guy who has been killed by a Terminator, an Alien and a Predator which made him the unluckiest guy of th world.

Iron Man is the movie who really brought back Bobby in the A-List. A scanner darkly (I'm not a fan) is a movie who didn't have a big impact. We could cite Kiss Kiss Bang Bang for Robert Downey Jr, but Iron Man is the one for me.

We are off-topic, it would be better to stop here even if I like this subject.
