Well if you're playing a zone, switches in defense can easily happen, so even if you set your PF who's playing at PG to guard the opposing PF in the defensive set, then he may still end up on the perimeter for any number of reasons. If you want to make sure he's always on the PF, you play M2M when cross-matching.
