If you let the coach choose from the chart, why should be a bug that he chooses a backup?
Because nobody knows how this is supposed to work. I think I might have reported this as a bug once, but I accept this is a gray area and it's acceptable. As a matter of fact the GS can subvert the orders if the backup (but not the reserve, I don't think, although I'd have to try that specifically in a scrimmage at the end of the season) is significantly better than the starter.

You can see in the game manual is not clear at all:
You can set the balance between how much coaches use their own judgment or defer to yours with the substitutions box. You can use mostly your judgment (Strictly Follow Depth Chart), entirely the coach's judgment (Let Coach Decide), a mix between the two (Coach Picks from Depth Chart).
I'm not sure whether LCD now picks the best player at each position among the available ones making the Depth Chart completely useless (i.e. you put your Cs at PG defending PG, but the coach completely modifies the depth chart and plays them at C) or picks from the depth chart but always the best possible for the position (ie the Cs will play at PG, but the coach picks the best possible among them for the PG position). The first option is the same as LCD without setting a depth chart at all, the second is a glorified version of how CPfDC works.

Either way it's extremely vague in the manual, so it might be a bug in its own right.

@Lemon: Is the one that actually started the game stronger then the one that came in during garbage time?
Yes he is, however the previous week, same setup and the orders were not subverted. GS made the difference. This always happens when the orders are subverted, the depth chart is followed in garbage time and the coach sometimes subvert the orders during non-garbage time periods.

If so, the intelligence is in the code to make the call, it's just not assigned to that garbage time the same way as it is to who starts the game.
The way I see it, the starters no matter how they were selected (user or coach) should not play garbage time if there are alternatives available. I think that's incoherent and not how things are intended to be.

It is normal behaviour to have non-starters starting using LCD, however, it is not normal for those guys to play both most minutes during normal gameplay and garbage time. There could be something wrong there and I'll check it out next time I update the GE.

Thanks: it was Coach Pick from the Depth Chart although I can test LCD as well in a scrimmage later on to see if the same thing happens.

I hope I use the right post to ask my question about substitutions:

yesterday I had a Center selected to play as player, sub and backup. I always have "Strictly Follow Depth Chart" and in foul selection I have "Let them play". by this I intend to have for 48 minutes per week each of the 3 Centers I have in roster.
despite these selections my Center played for only 36 minutes and another Center played for 12 minutes.
so the question is how on earth can I be 100% sure that every of the 3 centers will get full training per week? is it so difficult for the game developers to make a simple plan for the game? I dont want any substitutions. should I count on random facts and hope that my player will play for 48 minutes? awful. just that

Hi there, probably more of a post for the 'Help' section, but I'll try to answer you even though I have no time to check what actually happened in your game (also because you didn't provide a link)

To get 48 minutes use Strictly with let them play and set the trainee at all 3 positions. The trick is not to have a player on the bench who might replace your trainee in garbage time, so to make sure of 48 you need to have a maximum of 9 players, 4 starters + 4 backups and the trainee. The game will empty the bench in garbage time (the opposite of the bug I reported where the starter kept playing) so if you have 5-7 backups, you are guaranteed that the trainee will be substituted.

There are additional issues. One is when a trainee with very low stamina is subbed out for 1 minute or 2 in favour of a much better player with good stamina. This is most likely a bug, you can get around it by either playing only 5 players (so there are no substitutes) or training stamina until the trainees are at awful or better and see if it makes a difference. Finally there is the FT substitution issue: sometimes if one of your players (not the trainee) needs to be subbed out, but he's shooting free throws, the engine will sub out the trainee for the replacement of the FT shooter and then sub out the FT shooter himself at the next possible chance. This is a rarer bug that can only be avoided by playing a 5 man lineup.

In general unless your trainees have 1 or 2 stamina, you will see that playing a 9 man lineup with the trainee at all 3 positions and using Strictly will give you 48+ reliably. The options I use (Coach Pick from Depth Chart) also works fairly reliably for this, but I'd stick to Strictly as the official line from the BBs is that Strictly is the only sub pattern to get reliable minutes.

Hope this helped.
