Yes, the Lakers (with the right coach) are still definitely a contender. Again, even with the right coach (ie. Phil Jackson), they can play flat and come up short like they did this season.
Mike Brown pretty much has to win the championship next season for him to be considered a success. Anything less and everyone will say his hiring was a mistake.
The thing is, I don't think Phil was the "right coach" last season. I think that the players had ceased to pay attention to Phil Jackson and his coaching staff. And that's why they ended up the way they did.
I do agree too: anything less than a title's going to make it difficult for fans to be "ok" with Coach Brown.
I think 2 things need to happen moving forward...
- Brown needs to get an excellent staff around him. Grgurich and Messina should LA be able to land 'em...
- LA needs a new point. Regardless of what system's in place, Fish's now too old, and Blake isn't the answer.
