Since matching your best defender with the best attacker makes all the sense, while the rest play a man-to-man defense, why would you ever choose man-to-man over a box?

I.e. wouldn't box defenses completely render man-to-man useless?

No, the other 4 form a "box" with 2 players around the basket and two further away - imagine 3-2 zone, but instead of 3-2 it is 2-2 sort of. That's how I interpret this tactic (and I used this tactic A LOT over the past 3-4 seasons).

yeah, the problem is with M2M defence is you need very complete players which lead to high salary which is not really doable for small nations D1 teams in the long term.

Its hard to maintain a 800 k salary here in Austria with a D1 team. And all of these well rounded players earn 200 k.
