Press Announcements

New Zealand opens season with a win

The last time the NZ U21 team won a game on the court (not a walkover) was in October 2012 against India, and the last time they beat Japan was in 2010. So the feeling in the team camp all week was that we wanted to start this season fresh and be enthusiastic about the upcoming season.

That extra enthusiasm was felt right from the tip off when 20yo Center Chuck Daily won the ball and fed PF Alun Misstear the ball in the paint for the opening basket. Misstear teamed up with SF Dain Gilhooley to go a combined 12 from 14 (26pts) in the first half. That effort was enough to give NZ a 19 point first half lead, and it was maintained in the second half as the team shot 56% from the field to open up the season with an nice victory over a key opponent.

Star players: (mvp votes)

3 points: Alun Misstear (10/12 for 26pts, 10rbs, 6asts, 3blks)
2 points: Brody Macdonald (12pts, 7asts, 6rbs, 3stls)
1 point : Chuck Knight (17pts, 12rbs)
